The Human Development Report released today ranks Singapore at 23rd and is classified under "Very High Human Development".

ok.....
let's see how long this thread takes to become another flame war between the Pro and Anti PAP again.
I don't really think you could ever argue that Singapore isn't developed.
But the devil in the details is how much is flowing towards the majority of Singaporeans or in other words able to be enjoyed by them.
I personnally like to look at numbers and cross reference with other report. for example the recent WEF...put up the following numbers.
So very high human development still translate the a problematics on educated workforce....???
Singapore problematics of doing business in the top 10 was
#4 Inadequately educated workforce.
#8 Poor work ethic of national labor force.
Labor market efficiency
Female participant of work force was rank only 84 out of 133.
Investment in education
Primary education was only rank 109 out of 133
Tertiary rank 29 out of 133....
i can only said that lower education spending on primary and possible ties to Poor educated work force...
If you are a drop out...it become a competitive issue and socially it translated wider Income GAP.
I always wonder why SG Govt never implement compulsory of 12 -13 yrs of education all the way to JC. If we are going to import FT than perharps it is necessary to arm Singapore citizen with a better educational system to compete in the job market.
I think this method is non sense.
one of the interesting things of this report ,like other survey,is that they use the %
on certain expenditure, say education or health as a yardstick to determine ranking.
This method cant distinguish if Country A is more effective
in using my expenditure than Country B.
Other international survey also use this yard stick.Poor guys.
Stupid scholars.

Singapore's health spending is a joke, they don't subsidize anything (maybe they did subsidize, right after they markup the price by 100%), they just let the citizens pay through their nose, that's why the healthcare spending is low.

Well maybe there is one resources Singapore is not spending on.....but enjoy free riding.
Three American scientists received the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering an enzyme that plays a key role in cellular health and aging. Their finding sparked a new line of research into possible treatments for age-related maladies, such as cancer, blindness and cardiovascular disease
lionnoisy,
One question that deals in your area of expertise, Australia.
Singapore has a higher GDP per Capita than Japan (according to lionnoisy).
Australia has a lower GDP per Capita compared to Singapore.
Why is it that Australians make 4-5 times the salary of Singaporeans?
When you travel overseas, why is it that everything is very expensive and when foreigners travel to Singapore, why is everything dirt cheap?
Then you ask yourself, doesn't Singapore have a higher GDP per Capita Australia, then how come Singaporeans have less spending power. Why are supermarket food products of the equivalent price, sometimes even cheaper than Singapore?
Below is the data from Australian Bureau of Statistics, it shows the hourly wages of non-managerial employees, cleaners are paid AU$19 an hour, food preparation assistant (this could be your Mcdonalds' staff) AU$18.60 an hour and general clerks are paid AU$26.20 an hour.
How much are Singaporean cleaners paid, Mcdonalds' staff and general clerks paid on an hourly basis?
Link to table for Australians (non-managerial) hourly earnings based on occupation.
I hope you don't run and hide like Gazelle. Please answer my queries.
maybe you'd like to pay a visit to their tax office
Originally posted by 2cansam:maybe you'd like to pay a visit to their tax office
Been there, done that.
I think the calculation for Australia is understated cause author only used 3 times not 4-5 times, disposable income should be above AU$26,865.
Singapore:
Income per year: SG$12,000
Income Taxes: 0%
GST: 7%
Spending Power After GST: SG$11,160 [SG$12,000 x 93%]
Australia:
(waiter or retail staff based on 3 times earnings of Singaporean only, not 5 times which is the higher bound)
Income per year: AU$36,000
Income Taxes: up to AU$6,000 = AU$0; AU$6,001 to AU$25,000 = AU$2,850; AU$25,001 to AU$36,000 = AU$3,300
Total Income Taxes: AU$6,150 [AU$ 0 + AU$ 2,850 + AU$ 3,300]
Income after Income Taxes: AU$29,850
GST: 10%
Link: Australia Personal Tax Rates
Spending Power After GST: AU$26,865 [AU$29,850 x 90%]
An average waiter in Australia will have a spending power of AU$26,865, while a Singaporeans waiter will have only SG$11,160. Why do you think when we go for holidays overseas, we can afford less than an equivalent GDP per capita country like Australia or New Zealand.
You do the maths and tell me who is actually better off after personal taxes and GST.
Singaporeans or Australians???
Though Australia might have a higher personal tax structure, but their average wages are 3 to 5 times of Singaporeans. Even after deducting high taxes and GST, they still do end up with more money in the pocket than an average Singaporean. Moreover, they have no need to pay for healthcare and basic education.

The rest I dun wan to say lah huh. The statement in red is contributed by:
1. Buy a car when you dun need a car. Using Public transport is expensive, yes but so much cheaper than a car.
2. Buying 42 inch LCD when a 32 inch can do the job.
3. Eat at restaurants when coffeeshop food can do the job.
4. Go for holidays when complaining about economic recession.
5. Buy IT products, plenty of them, when complaining abt economic recession.
6. Night spots are still full of people when complaining abt economic recession.
7. *fill in your own statements abt singaporeans spending habits* while complaining abt economic recession.
After Singaporeans do all these things, they look at the money left and then complain that they have very little spending power because they dun have any more money left...but maybe thats because they are spending more than they can afford to? Then stil wana blame others?
And anyway i dun think groceries in places like OZ and NZ is cheaper. Some things expensive, some things cheaps. Beef is cheap in NZ but the chickens are bloody expensive. So whats the key message? In singapore I eat more chicken. In NZ i eat a lot of beef, one principle, BUY what you can afford.
Your spending power is determined by what you BUY not what you want.

When I say "spending power" it means "disposable income" in economic terms. The calculations don't have any behavioural bias (like want to buy car, condo, dine in restaurants, holidays, etc). It just shows you how much a person would have left after Income Taxes and GST.
I hope you can understand.
A waiter in Australia gets AU$26,865 (after income taxes and GST), while a Singapore waiter gets SG$11,160 (after income taxes and GST). ***Should be SG$11,160 not $1,000, perhaps this is the part for the confusion with with Stevenson101, my fault, was busy monitoring the aircon service technician and posting.
If both person have similar spending habits, then the person in Australia still can afford more things than the person in Singapore. Get it?
Why is there such a large difference? Singapore has a higher GDP per Capita to Australia and US.
Why?
Singapore's GDP per Capita is way ahead of Australia, but how come disposable income differ by so much?

Singapore's wage rate is only slightly better than China, in the near future, it will trend towards China's wage rate.
Why is that so?

I browse through all my post again, I don't think I mentioned AU$26,000 a month in any of the above post.
Think I know where the fault lies, it's because when I typed $1,000, I turned back to monitor the aircon service technician, then I posted without reading the post.
It should be SG$11,160 a year compared with AU$26,000 a year.

Why?
-----------------------------------
Firstly, wow you have such a deep appreciation of economics that I would never be able to fathom.
But of cos, of cos you are right. You say a waiter earns 26K AUD per year after taxes in OZ.. And a Singapore waiter earns 11K SGDafter taxes. Therefore, the disposable income is greater for the waiter in OZ right? May I know, what are your basis for saying that? Enlighten me.
using % in expenditure as a yard stick is redicuous.
For example,
http://hdr.undp.org/en/media/HDR_2009_EN_Complete.pdf
199 (210 of 229) Table N,
search Table N,
SG health is just 6 %,while the No.1 to 22 nd countries using 10 to abt
20 % .Are u sure the 22 nd cooutries can give better health services
than SG?I think u can find some citoizens from these 22 countries coming to SG
to seek treatment.Pl note many of them who come to SG
just a middle class, not necessiarly billionaire.
@@@@@@@@
Using % in income for family or expenditure for gavaman as yard stick
cannot reflect the reality. For example, the lowest 5% income family in SG who spend say 20 % on foods.Their counter part in a third world country
spend 40%.Do u think the latter get better nutrition than SG?
