  The kit is sold to professionals medical guys,not man in the street,even u have a PhD!!

  MOH get a lot.No need to worry.If swine flue mutate,SG is in a favourable position

  Yes, "if the swine flu mutate, SG is in a favourable position than other countries" - to get swallowed by the new viral strain.

  Getting the first test kit out to detect the existence of a specific virus that cause the original H1N1 virus is not the same as getting the miracle drug to kill the H1N1 virus.

   

  As matters stand, even SG has not develop the test kit to detect the N1N1 that seems to affect the pussy in making all the unnecesary orgasmic noise over nothing.

  PrimerDesign Ltd, a UK firm founded by University of Southampton scientists, has won the race to produce the first DNA test kit for the Mexican swine flu.

  The first shipment of rapid-results tests has been sent today directly to Mexico as well as many other territories to help authorities monitor the increasing number of suspected cases.

  Project coordinator Dr Rob Powell said: "This past Sunday at midnight was a very special moment for us. We were able to show conclusively that the test works."

  The rapid test has results in only two hours compared to current diagnostic tests which take two days.

  "Monitoring the spread of the virus is now the key weapon against a possible pandemic. These tests will contribute to the global effort to halt the disease," said Dr Jim Wicks from PrimerDesign.

  The company is part of the University's SETsquared Business Incubation programme.

  The PrimerDesign swine flu real-time PCR kit is sold primarily for research use but could be used to diagnose the disease in laboratories globally.

  Use of Rapid Influenza Diagnostic Tests for Patients with Influenza-like Illness during the Novel H1N1 Influenza Virus (Swine Flu) Outbreak

  Information for Health Care Professionals

  Background

  Rapid influenza diagnostic tests can help in the diagnosis and management of patients who present with signs and symptoms compatible with influenza. Such tests detect seasonal influenza A and B viral nucleoprotein antigens in respiratory specimens. The currently circulating novel H1N1 influenza virus (also referred to as swine flu) is an influenza A virus. Data are not yet available to inform recommendations on the use of rapid influenza diagnostic tests in patients with novel H1N1 virus infection. It is reasonable to assume that rapid diagnostic tests that detect influenza A viral nucleoprotein antigen can detect novel H1N1 flu infection in respiratory specimens as these nucleoprotein antigens are highly conserved across influenza A viruses. However, the sensitivity and specificity of the different rapid tests is not yet known for this novel virus. CDC has received anecdotal reports of false positive and false negative results. Clinicians may consider using rapid diagnostic tests as part of their evaluation of patients with signs and symptoms compatible with influenza, but results should be interpreted with caution. Confirmation of novel H1N1 flu infection can only be made by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or viral culture.

  Reliability and Interpretation of Rapid Influenza Test Results

  The reliability of rapid influenza diagnostic tests depends largely on the conditions under which they are used, and are entirely based on the experience with seasonal influenza.

  • For detection of seasonal influenza virus infection, sensitivities of rapid diagnostic tests are approximately 50-70% when compared with viral culture or RT-PCR, and specificities of rapid diagnostic tests for influenza are approximately 90-95%. Sensitivity and specificity of these tests for detection of the novel H1N1 flu virus are unknown.
  • False-positive (and true-negative) results are more likely to occur when influenza is uncommon in the community, which is generally at the beginning and end of an outbreak.
  • False-negative (and true-positive) results are more likely to occur when influenza is common in the community, which is typically at the height of an outbreak.
  • Test sensitivity may vary depending on when in the course of illness the specimen is collected. Respiratory specimens for testing should be collected in the first 4-5 days of illness when viral shedding is greatest.

  Given these limitations, the decision of whether or not to test patients with rapid influenza diagnostic tests should be based upon the patient’s presenting symptoms, whether or not cases of novel H1N1 have been confirmed in the area, and/or the patient’s risk for severe disease or other complications.

  • How to interpret a positive test result:
    
    

    A patient testing positive for influenza B by rapid diagnostic test likely has been infected with seasonal influenza B virus that is continuing to circulate or is a false-positive result. Such a patient is unlikely to have novel H1N1 virus infection.

    
    There are several possibilities when a patient tests positive for influenza A by rapid antigen test:

    • The patient might have novel H1N1 virus infection
    • The patient might have seasonal influenza A virus infection or
    • The patient might have a false positive test result.
    
    
  • Information provided by states and local health authorities should be consulted to determine whether public health authorities are advising that patients who test positive on a rapid influenza antigen test need additional testing. In areas with many new confirmed cases of novel H1N1 flu infection and where community spread of H1N1 is occurring, patients who test positive on a rapid influenza diagnostic test can be treated empirically with antiviral medications if clinically indicated (see Interim Guidance on Antiviral Recommendations for Patients with Novel Influenza A (H1N1) Virus Infection and Their Close Contacts ) without further testing.. In areas with no or few confirmed cases of novel H1N1 flu, a nasopharyngeal swab/aspirate or nasal aspirate should be collected and sent to the state public health laboratory for RT-PCR to determine if the patient has H1N1 infection, seasonal influenza A virus infection, or a false-positive test result. See Interim guidelines for specimen collection and Interim biosafety guidelines for laboratory workers.
    
  • How to interpret a negative result:
    
    Novel H1N1 flu virus infection cannot be excluded when a patient tests negative for influenza A by rapid antigen test. If the patient has an epidemiologic link to a confirmed case (i.e. had close contact with a confirmed case), or has either traveled to or resides in a community where there are one or more confirmed novel H1N1 cases, further testing and treatment should be based upon clinical suspicion, severity of illness, and risk for complications. If there is no epidemiologic link and the patient has mild illness, further testing and treatment are not recommended.

  Pl help me to check if the product brought up by  one of  our most learned

  But first pl accept My apology.

  I have added some info to the first posting ytd.But in the end i post

  it in duplictae.MOD delete the amended version.My fault.Not MOD.

  I have added some thoughts abt ALL the factors we must need to get the quick

   test kit avaiable for the market.

  1.The kit must produce the accurate answer fast enough.(few hours is the maximum).

  2.The size of the test kit and ALL necessiraily equipments shall be very small,

  light and portable,easy for transportion.

  3.It can be reproduced in mass scale --

  A.fast enough----in no. of days.U need capacity to make it.

  B.cheap enough---i dunt know how to fix.Gavaman need to buy in bulk.

  C.accuractely enough and stable performances.

  ..............and many more.U know i am just a layman...

  Technology.am (May 14, 2009) — Quest Diagnostics Inc. has launched a lab testing kit to detect H1N1 virus that causes swine flu.

  This first commercially available real-time PCR diagnostic test to identify U.S. patients infected with the new H1N1 flu virus.

  Quest said, the tests can be ordered directly from Focus Diagnostics or through the Quest Diagnostics national laboratory network and it is expected to cost $300.

  Quest’s Focus Diagnostics infectious disease reference laboratory, in Cypress, California validated the test using specimens confirmed as positive for the new virus by public health authorities.

  The company said there is no need of approval for the test by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

  The standard test for the A(H1N1) virus, commonly known as swine flu, consists of three stages, with the test kit serving in the first stage to determine whether a person is infected, according to Shih.

  In Taiwan, three categories are used to describe the status of A(H1N1) infection -- under investigation, probable case and confirmed case.

  Once someone is diagnosed positive in the first stage, the lab then conducts virus isolation and virus antibody testing to obtain a more accurate diagnosis, Shih said.

  According to the World Health Organization's latest report on the swine flu outbreaks, as of 5 p.m. GMT April 30, 11 countries had officially reported 257 cases of infection.

  The U.S. government had reported 109 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death, while Mexico had reported 97 confirmed human cases of infection, including seven deaths.

  Other countries reporting confirmed cases include Austria (one case), Canada (19 cases), Germany (three cases), Israel (two cases), the Netherlands (one case) , New Zealand (three cases) , Spain (13 cases), Switzerland (one case) and the United Kingdom (eight cases).

  No deaths had been reported from any of those countries, but the WHO warned that the situation was continuing to evolve rapidly.

  Taiwan has launched measures to prevent the virus from crossing its borders.

  According to Shih, the Cabinet-level Department of Health (DOH) acquired the key DNA sequence of the new virus strain April 25 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and two days later obtained the RNA of the virus from the Miaoli-based Animal Technology Institute of Taiwan.

  Using this information, the DOH was able to develop and produce the quick-test kit, which will be distributed for use by the government and contracted laboratories, Shih said.

  Swiss pharmaceuticals company Novartis AG said Friday it has successfully produced a first batch of swine flu vaccine weeks ahead of expectations.
  
  The vaccine was made in cells, rather than grown in eggs as is usually the case with vaccines, the company said.
  
  The announcement comes a day after the World Health Organization declared swine flu, also known as A(H1N1), a pandemic. The move indicates that a global outbreak is under way. WHO says drugmakers will likely have vaccines approved and ready for sale after September.
  
  Novartis said it would use the first batch of vaccine for pre-clinical evaluation and testing. It is also being considered for clinical trials, the company said.
  
  The vaccine was produced at a Novartis plant in Marburg, Germany. Novartis said the facility could potentially produce millions of doses of vaccine a week.
  
  A second plant is being built in Holly Springs, North Carolina, the company said.
  
  Novartis said more than 30 governments have requested vaccine supplies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, which placed a $289 million order in May.

  The UI Hygienic Laboratory became on Wednesday one of the first state public-health laboratories certified to test for the H1N1 virus.

  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the UI lab to conduct testing on its own. To get the OK, CDC officials had to confirm five cases already confirmed by the Hygienic Lab to ensure scientists are testing properly. The CDC provided a testing kit which allows for 200 individual tests. Scientists can request more as needed.

  Pat Blake, spokeswoman for the Hygienic Laboratory, said the certification is “great news for the university, and our staff and for Iowans.”

  As of Wednesday, the Oakdale-based laboratory had received more than 600 specimens for testing since April 27. Doug Beardsley, the director of the Johnson County Public Health Department, said four newly confirmed H1N1 cases bring the state’s total to five. Thirty-five additional state samples are also probably H1N1, Beardsley said.

  “When you’re testing more and testing quicker, you’re more likely to find something,” Beardsley said. “There are always more cases out there than what is tested and confirmed.”

  Prior to approval, local officials sent specimens to the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, which usually took up to four days for processing, Blake said. Now, she said, tests can be completed within 24 or 48 hours.

  “This testing will provide faster results to our partners at the Iowa Department of Public Health and allow them to accurately track the H1N1 ‘swine-like’ in Iowa, and implement public health interventions,” Lucy DesJardin, program manager for molecular research and development, said in a statement.

  More rapid testing across the nation could mean an increase in the number of confirmed cases being reported, CDC acting director Richard Besser said at a press briefing Wednesday.

  “The rapid increases in confirmed cases that I had predicted for today that we’re reporting is largely due to the ability of more and more states to do testing and so some of the backlog on testing is going to lead to catch up and we are going to continue to see those numbers increase,” Besser said.

  If Hygienic Laboratory officials confirmed a case in Johnson County, Beardsley said the public would be aware, but advice to prevent the flu will likely not change.

  “The primary thing is to self-isolate — stay at home. Any caregiver should take normal precautions, like wearing a mask so they’re not breathing in droplets [of the virus],” he said.
