  A LEADING scientist has become the first local researcher to be conferred the Singapore Defence Technology Distinguished Fellowship.
  
  Emeritus Professor Ang How Ghee was one of the main players who set up Singapore's chemical defence capabilities in the 1980s. The 67-year-old drew up the masterplan, linked the country with overseas partners, and trained fledgling scientists in the field.
  
  The award, which recognises those who have made major contributions in advancing the Republic's defence technology capabilities, has previously gone to defence science luminaries.
  
  They include Dr Bengt Anderberg, former director-general of Sweden's Defence Research Agency; and Mr Larry Lynn, former director of the United States' Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency.
  
  From having no such research capabilities in the 1980s, Singapore's chemical defence capabilities reached a milestone in 2003, when Singapore's DSO National Laboratories was designated as one of the authorised labs for the 167-member Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, putting it on par with the world's best.
  
  Prof Ang, a father of three who currently heads the Energetic Materials Research Centre at Nanyang Technological University, said after receiving the award from Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean yesterday that he was 'simply overwhelmed'.
  
  'It gives me new energy for new areas of research,' added the former chemistry professor at the National University of Singapore.
