Most of the Indo Chinese in Java cannot speak mandarin or dialect, save for a few terms used here and there for money, holidays and greeting of relatives the traditional chinese way. Tks to Suharto who banned everything spoken or displayed in mandarin.
In Msia, dialects are still very widespoken with the most of Msian chinese speaking cantonese; penang and johor chinese speaking hokkien.
In Spore, dialects have been banned in the media and according to the old man, it hampers our ability to learn english and mandarin. I think it's a miracle if you can even grab a handful of teens who can speak dialects. Do you think it's such a waste if dialects die off like that?
(no f pap bullshit pls)
variety is the spice of life..
just like in languages, each dialect shows where the language came from..
however in the current globalised world, each dialect is being diluted.. but that in itself is a dialect...
think about it... each dialect was a deviation from the main language until it became distinct due to the isolation from the other "branches" of the language...
now the different branches are converging again..
it is a sad thing if we do not document where each dialect is from, and what it sounds... there should be an oral history.. but we should let it run its course without "bans" and stupidities imposed by whatever politicians trying their hapless hands at social engineering...
trying to keep things "pure" is trying to stop a flood with an umbrella.. we are not and cannot be isolated...
teach the teens dialects.. don't try to bash them into "learning" it.. because they are, in their own way, creating their own dialects...

To me, I take it as a part of culture, identity, tradition...
Definately a waste if dialect die off just like tat...
some of the dialect such as Teochew is a very old language.
Sometime i wonder the "mother tongue" should be our dialect rather than mandarin.....

Yes, a waste if die off....
I singapore chinese refuse to speak dialects
Yes it's definitely a waste, but to me, it's not that important since i don't use it nor i don't see the usage increasing for the next 10 or 20 years down the road. It's a bonus if you know how to speak, but not crippling if you don't.
knnbccb will never die off

RISE OF CHINA MAH.
Chinese is our mother tongue. I love mother tongue.
In taiwan, Hokkien is a language, not a dialect. We can read chinses character in hokkien, news in hokkien, show in hokkien, it gives us an identity and proud to use it as our nation icon. For english and chinese, it is up to individual to take it.
The French are proud of their local dialect, the Jap and Korean dun need english or chinese to be successful, so are the German.

in ROC, hokkien is a language, not dialect. In singapore, you term dialect as something you can speak but cannot write or read, which is not true, we can read chinese character and pronoun it in hokkien, so are beijing and shanghai dialect, their opera is a dialect, but they term it as a unique language.
Singapore govt had differentiated languages in dialect, which in real, there is no dialects in this world. The honghong can read chinese in cantonese, write it and study it too...so is cantonese a dialect....No, the movie stars are reading chinese script in cantonese...Omg!

I dont hate Chinese language. After all,i grew up in a Chinese speaking family n initially,my Chinese is better than my English,i mean much better...
But then,if u compare Chinese language n English,u will find that Chinese language is much harder to master.And too..complicated.If u learn 2 language,both Chinese n English,n u compare them,u will know.
I am sure thats why LKY refuse to learn Chinese language when his mother force him to learn it.But then, this bloody Chee Bye Attention seeking whore now force all Singaporean Chinese to study Chinese language at a high standard, just to show off he can master 2 languages.
Actually from my view, even if we drop Chinese language, there is also no great impact on we Chinese.Afterall, common languages are merging,n those language that are more easier to learn, simplify n can express better,of coz, will have more advantages.
My view is,as long as we Chinese or Asians or whatever, can continue to live on n catch up with modern days technology n living lifestyle, why bother so much?We are not going to change our skin colour just becoz we learn English, are we?
When Westerners adapt Arabic numbers into their Maths for easier calculation,do u see Westerners become Arabs?Or become Muslim? So why the worry?
