i think there are bands now which are close or on par with any decent act.
is it perception issue or just pure biasness on the part of sgprean?

That's right.Originally posted by shadez:Yeah, english acts have a hard time surviving in Singapore. There are kinda a few reasons to this though, a lack of market and with people already given so much choice of other already established US/UK acts, it's hard for people to try something new.
Any artiste that just releases a CD or tour in SG itself isn't going to make much money, face facts, the demographics over here is small and among our population, maybe around 20% do actually buy cd's as opposed to downloading.
Countries like the UK and US are so much bigger geographically and can sustain a market of music listeners. But even now, record stores are closing down all around the states as people are no longer interested in browsing through a record store for their music, it's downloading high heaven now...
SG does produce some good acts like Electrico for example, but how many cd's do they actually sell? Like perhaps, 20 000 copies? In the states, a album can hit millions of copies already, thats BIG money. An artiste can establish itself here, but ultimately, they have to go overseas if they do want to make it big.
SG by itself is not a music hub...well, that's another reason. Everyone all over the world is looking to the UK and US for their fix on music, who is fixing their eyes here even? If The Beatles were to produce the same definitive quality of music but in a twist of fate were based in SG instead, we would be going, Beatles...who?
All of us can do a part and support local gigs and buy local cd's though, that's the least we can do, to partly help the industry over here...
Well, MySpace is like the new playground for unknown underground bands nowadays. The place is literally teething with bands and musicians. I think if you were to count, it would be in the thousands!Originally posted by The man who was death:i'm wondering if any of our local act can make it big in myspace and then....maybe....who knows.........
I don't watch MTV one leh, how?Originally posted by shadez:Well, MySpace is like the new playground for unknown underground bands nowadays. The place is literally teething with bands and musicians. I think if you were to count, it would be in the thousands!
If a big marketing company like Sony BMG or Warner Music picks up a local bands act on MySpace, it would definitely go BIG...but that's taking that the CD be marketed mainly in the States. If it were to just be local, not much of a living there...
Now, as long as you appear on MTV with your music videos showing, you get your stuff out to a lot of people. Kids are watching MTV like it's their bible. Their music tastes are shaped out with what is mainstream and a definition of cool...even a crappy music can get you huge, just with the correct marketing. So basically, good music don't get you anywhere, anymore...the marketing company does.
Well, you don't. But a lot of people do...Originally posted by seow:I don't watch MTV one leh, how?
