Presidential hopefuls can choose from suggested symbols or submit their own
A helicopter, ship, flower, feather and magnifying glass are among eight suggested symbols candidates could use to represent them in the presidential election next month.
Candidates must provide a symbol to be placed opposite their names on ballot papers and to use in campaigning, if there is a contest for the post on Sep 23.
They can choose from the list of eight approved symbols - which also includes a violin, scroll and binoculars - and which was published on Monday (Aug 28) in the Government Gazette ahead of the upcoming election.
Alternatively, they can submit their own symbol for approval by returning officer Ng Wai Choong, who is chief executive officer of the Energy Market Authority.
The Election Department's handbook for candidates states that the choice of symbol must be settled before 12.30pm on Nomination Day, if the election is contested.
Three people have said they intend to stand in the election, which is reserved for Malay candidates - former Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, and businessmen Farid Khan and Salleh Marican. Voters will go to the polls if more than one qualifies to run.
Mr Farid has created his own symbol and will officially unveil it after he is found eligible to run, his spokesman said on Monday. The symbol could be a blue house with what appears to be the Chinese character "ren", or people, for its roof, which is seen in the cover photo on his Facebook page and in a cartoon image of himself that he posted.
Mr Salleh has submitted his own symbol for approval, said his spokesman, without giving further details.
Besides appearing on ballot papers, candidate symbols must also be clearly displayed on posters or banners during the campaign period so voters can tell them apart, the candidate handbook states.
During the last presidential election in 2011, which saw a four-way contest, President Tony Tan Keng Yam's symbol was his trademark spectacles. Dr Tan Cheng Bock chose a palm tree, Mr Tan Jee Say chose a heart, and Mr Tan Kin Lian used a speech bubble with an etched-out handprint.

Presidential hopeful Halimah Yacob unveiled her campaign slogan of "Do Good Do Together" on Tuesday (Aug 29), calling on all Singaporeans to join her in building a community of excellence that is inclusive and progressive.
The former Speaker of Parliament, who stepped down from politics earlier this month to run in the presidential election, also introduced her campaign team made up of volunteers, friends and former colleagues.
At a press conference held at the NTUC Centre just one day after the Writ of Election was issued, she said she had chosen the slogan as "a president should unify the nation".
"I really believe there is a lot of good that we can do... we can do so much good for everyone if we do it together," she said, adding that her goal, if she becomes president, is to look at the shared goals and common values of Singaporeans.

Presidential hopeful Farid Khan shuts Facebook page after gaffe
A social media gaffe yesterday prompted presidential hopeful Farid Khan Kaim Khan to close his personal Facebook account.
A link to an online petition calling for the trial of Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi for human rights violations over the Rohingya crisis had appeared on his personal Facebook page, and the incident was reported by local news blog All Singapore Stuff.
Mr Farid had submitted papers for a certificate of eligibility and Malay community certificate for the upcoming presidential electionon Aug 24.
Accompanied by screenshots, the article had said: "Presidential candidate Farid Khan has thrown his weight behind a petition calling on the European Court of Human Rights to try Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi for human rights violations over the 'ethnic cleansing' taking place against the Rohingya community in her country."
At 4.15pm yesterday, Mr Farid uploaded a statement to his campaign's Facebook account, which is still up.
Said Mr Farid: "The report is completely untrue. While managing my personal Facebook account, a member of my media team had accidentally shared several postings which appeared on my wall."
He said this happened due to the use of a touchscreen device.
His personal Facebook page was closed to prevent such an incident from happening again.
Mr Farid's campaign manager, Mr Borhan Saini, told The New Paper that the team member in question has been given a "warning".
He said: "It was an accident; the team member just tangan gatal (Malay for itchy hands)."

3 applications received for Malay Community Certificate
The stage is set for a possible contest in the reserved election later this month, with three Malays submitting applications to run for the presidency and the Elections Department (ELD) yesterday confirming the number of Malay contenders who applied to stand in the election, after the deadline at 5pm.
The trio are former Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, 63; Second Chance Properties chief executive Salleh Marican, 67; and Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific chairman Farid Khan, 62.
They submitted applications for a certificate of eligibility and a community certificate, which are required to contest the election, last month.
The ELD said it also received two other applications, which will be rejected. They are from private-hire driver Shirwin Eu, 34, who applied for a Chinese community certificate, and former private tutor Ooi Boon Ewe, 76, who declared in his application that he did not consider himself a member of the Chinese, Malay, Indian or other minority communities.
In the coming days, the Presidential Elections Committee will scrutinise the applications by Madam Halimah, Mr Salleh and Mr Farid and decide who qualifies to run for the presidency. It has up to Sept 12, the eve of Nomination Day.- THE STRAITS TIMES
