According to the ST, the reason sited for breaking up the GRC is that ppl are unable to identify with giant GRCs. In other words, indentity crisis.
But I remember reading an article, many years ago, that these giant GRCs were formed because they brought about economies of scale.
I suspect this so called economies of scale was never forth coming. Think about it, what economies of scale can be derived? Pooling of fund for investment? They did and bombed it with Lehman Brothers minibond.
I suspect these gaint GRCs really are barriers to political engagement for the PAP. PAP risks isolating and disfranchising the common ppl further.
In the long run, these GRCs will turn the already apolitical Singaporeans further apolitical Maybe, turn them off state participation totally and force them to underground movement.

Once, ST raise questions with Cynthia Phua if she was going over to Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC when she was spotted doing some activities in the PRP GRC.
So probably she might not even be in Aljunied GRC after all in the next nomination...

reason why PAP break up GRC is becoz they know many more people hate them so if the ship goes down at least 5 PAP toadies won't get knocked out mah...............
they reckon they might lose 2 out of 5 single wards at most..............better than losing 4 or 5 at one go...........
this kind of shit tactics used in the US long long ago.............in the 1800s................

Residents at Marine Parade GRC could be in for more surprises in the coming elections, going by the plans revealed by the opposition parties.
Some of the parties told The Straits Times (ST) yesterday they are interested in contesting for the single-member constituencies (SMCs) that may be carved from the Marine Parade GRC.
This comes after Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong revealed that Braddell Heights, Mountbatten and Kaki Bukit wards have a higher chance of being turned into SMCs in the upcoming elections, due by February 2012.
The three areas lie on the outskirts of the Marine Parade GRC.
Singapore People’s Party chairman Sin Kek Tong, who stood at Braddell Heights in 1991 and 1988, told the paper he would make the ward his priority should it become an SMC again.
He plans to visit Braddell Heights next month.
Both the Socialist Front and Reform Party said they were interested in contesting in a single-seat ward carved from the Marine Parade GRC.
The Socialist Front intends to contest in at least two SMCs, while the Reform Party intends to contest in Chua Chu Kang SMC and at least one new SMC.
Mr Goh Meng Seng, the secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party, welcomed the news but decline to reveal more.
The Worker’s Party and Singapore Democratic Party also reserved comment. The latter will hold a meeting soon to discuss these developments.
The parties interviewed called for the boundaries report to be released soon, and some also speculated this move to create SMCs in Marine Parade GRC was to bait Workers’ Party chairman Sylvia Lim, who led the team in Aljunied GRC in 2006.
According to new rules, there will be at least 12 SMCs in the next elections, from the current nine.

I think so too.
They seem to want to cut their losses as much as they can by fragmenting the opposition parties wanting to contest in the GRCs.
Losing 4 single seats is still better than one 5 or 6 seat GRC.

Wait later they tell you only 4 GRCs for this coming election - North, South, East and West GRCs of 20 MPs each.
If I were the opposition, I would go kopitiam drink my teh si and not worry so much about all these announcements.
The incumbent seems to be sweating a lot these days and they will do anything to try to confuse the opposition.
