Ionescu's account flawed
FORMER Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu's account of what happened in the early hours of Dec 15 last year, when he said the embassy's Audi A6 sedan was stolen, was presented in court yesterday.
But it did not square with the evidence offered by the more than 50 witnesses who have testified in the Coroner's Court in the last six days.
They were giving evidence for the inquiry into the death of Mr Tong Kok Wai, 30, a victim of a hit-and-run accident on Dec 15 who was so badly hurt that he had to be taken off life support 10 days later.
Dr Ionescu, 49, did not attend the hearing to which he had been invited. He had claimed that he had to return to Romania for medical treatment.
Yesterday's final witness, Station Inspector Raimi Yusof, an investigation officer with the Traffic Police, read out a statement made by Dr Ionescu to the police nine hours after the accident.
In it, Dr Ionescu claimed he discovered the locked car stolen from outside the Romanian embassy at about 3am on Dec 15, shortly before the accident.

More I read about this story the more my blood is boiling (shakes head). If this was America I would go to Walmart buy lots of weapons and ammuniton then I go to a nice quiet white neighborhood and start killing Ang Mor lang one by one
Clear cut Silviu Ionescu is the driver who killed the pedestrian.
Big hoo haa investigation/enquiry/commission just for show only.
Point is Republic of Singapore cannot do anything to Romania.
will it be just a "fine" in the end?
They will put pressure on him until he cannot tahan and compensate the dead man's family but if he got no soul that one also wont work
If today the driver is a "poor" chap, that guy had been jailed by now. The government might not be able to retain Ionescu, but can't they do not allow him to leave the country to assist in the accident, which involved life. Now do you think that Ionescu will want to return to Singapore?
Really show the double standard of our beloved government.
Please read up on diplomatic immunity.
he may or may not escape prosecution in singapore, but rest assured he wont escape his actions in his next life. this is certain.
yes, i believe in karma.
for your info, his diplomatic immunity has been removed by the Romanian government and he has been suspended from his post indefinitely.

The government is following according to the rules of diplomatic immunity.

At the time of the accident, and during the investigation, he was still under diplomatic immunity. By then he chabot already.
Probe 'must be thorough'
LAW Minister K. Shanmugam said yesterday he expects Romania to 'seriously consider' the evidence from a recently concluded coroner's inquiry into a fatal road accident that allegedly involved former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu.
He said the 'gravity' of the Dec 15 hit-and-run case last year warranted a thorough investigation on the Romanian government's part.
The coroner's court heard last week that Malaysian Tong Kok Wai died from severe head injuries after he was involved in the accident.
'The evidence laid out in the coroner's inquiry is there for all to see,' Mr Shanmugam, who is also Second Minister for Home Affairs, told reporters yesterday at a grassroots event in Sembawang.
'We expect that it is taken seriously and have asked the Romanian authorities to take the appropriate steps.'
Last Tuesday, the Romanian government, through its embassy's acting charge d'affaires here, Mr Alexandru Coseru, made a formal request for access to court documents relating to the six- day inquiry, which concluded last Wednesday.

Obviously that Ionescu guy is just spinning his own story....there are so many loopholes in his stroy. There are so many witness to the real side of how it happens. The only witness that was in a little bit of trouble initially was the korean lady...people thought that she was having an affair with that Romanian diplomat. Now seems that the air is cleared.
Now that his immunity has been lifted, is there a way for Singapore to "force" that liar and accuser back to Singapore? Can't tahan that guy, he can even think of accusing Singapore goverment...you think Singapore govt has better than nothing to do and to accuse a certain diplomat of this and that? He really should cook up a better story man.
Actually, Rominia could do more right? They just don't want to be the bad guy and take sides. "Clever".
PS: QX179R, thks for all the reports...at least I was able to catch up some of the news I missed.
S'pore will co-operate with Romanian authorities on Silviu Ionescu: MFA
SINGAPORE: Singapore said it has informed Romanian authorities that it will co-operate with them in their investigation on former diplomat Dr Silviu Ionescu.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Singapore
will work with them "to the fullest extent possible under our law".
It said this in response to reports that Romanian authorities had
requested for assistance in their investigation on Dr Ionescu.
Dr Ionescu, 49, is alleged to have been the driver of two hit-and-run
accidents last December, which claimed the life of a pedestrian, Mr Tong
Kok Wai.
He did not attend a coroner's inquiry that he had been invited to this
month.
Dr Ionescu had claimed that he was not the driver of the embassy car
involved in the accidents and had to return to Romania for medical
treatment. - CNA/vm

Yes,I believe in Karma too but more important we need to see some justice served in this hit and run story.Maybe in one of the past lives the deceased man rode a horse driven carriage over the Romanian ....who knows? But if there is no Karmic balance then the same thing could happen over and over again.SIANZ!
the fact that he can leave our country shows how much our law can do..
Our government is bound by the very laws they set...besides if they prevented the guy from leaving Singapore, Romania can bite back and say that Singapore broke its own laws...like that gone case le...dun even need to think about getting justice for the dead guy...
his reputation is in tatters by this. it just goes to show he is a chicken shit and hide under diplomatic immunity.
May be Singapore can entice him by saying that the sentence at most will be disqualified from driving for life and 18 months jail, provided he don't appeal.
How much did a drink driver get when he killed an old woman by drink driving while under suspension for drink driving?
What about this news over on the Romanian side? I bet the weather report is more important than this story for them.

well, he is a prime suspect in a hit n run, and how can asking him to stay be breaking own laws? don't understand.

Diplomatic immunity is easier to understand when all in OK.

And he had every right to do it.

Dip immunity is not a law set by Singapore.
Please read up on that issue.
