Welcome to Singapore! I've lived in both HK & SIN & have been a Flight Attendant for about 7yrs.
No doubt, HK's is one of my fave destination when it comes to food & shopping. But SIN's definitely my top choice when it comes to living. I can't complain much. I'm pretty comfortable here.
I disagree that SIN is a no-life & stressful country. I've worked in MNCs after my flying career & my Japanese, HK, German & American colleagues always tell me that work's so stressful in their hometown as compared to SIN. Well, I guess it all depends on how you choose to live. However, I do agree with Tycoapollo that the nightlife here is nowhere compared to HK or Bangkok, Tokyo etc :)
Housing is definitely cheaper here than HK. If you're not fussy, get a HDB flat (govt housing) instead of pte apt. Chk out housing sites such as http://www.erasingapore.com/, http://www.orangetee.com.sg/ to have an idea of the rental prices. Perhaps you should talk to your HR to get some assistance.
Here's another site you may find useful http://www.yoursingapore.com/content/traveller/en/experience.html.
Enjoy your stay here :)
Dont know if u r making the right choice, to me seems like moving from a war zone to another. What is US2200 monthly here??? If you think US2200 monthly can survive in HK then you can give a try. Don't forget here everything you pay even public toilet. Many many things here are 'no money no talk.'
I moved from HK to SG 12 years ago for work. 1st year rented a 4-room HDB flat. From 2nd year shared a private flat with two flatmates. More comfortable and cut down cost.
US$2,200 (around S$3,000) should be enough to cover basic expenses.
Accommodation: You can rent an HDB flat alone or share a condo (budget S$1,200 - 1,500). Utility (electricity and water) is incredibly high here (budget S$100 -150)
Healthcare: If not covered by your company, can go to a Polyclinic (similar to government clinic in HK). Private clinics charge quite low (~S$12 for consultation and up to ~S$20 including medicine).
Food: Cheaper than HK, if you don't mind eating in hawker centres or food courts. Restaurant prices are comparable to HK. Cooking ingredients here are higher because HK is lucky to have fresh imports from China. (budget S$500)
Lifestyle: I missed the buzz and nightlife in HK. But air is cleaner. Life is less stress. Much shorter working hours because people are more family-conscious. People are friendly to foreigners.
Transportation: Need to wait very long for buses and trains but very safe and cheaper than HK. Taxi is affordable, just avoid peak hours and from CBD. Car is considered a luxurious item here.
PM me if you need any help.
