Because that's the way French is, you usually don't pronounce the last consonant (unless it's 'c', 'r', 'f' or 'l') or an unaccented 'e'.Originally posted by fairlady_xoxo:Nope...just that i was wondering why it isn't pronounced directly as Jeh-tai-meh....

That's liaison. If the first letter of the word is a vowel or 'h', it takes on the sound of the last consonant of the preceding word.Originally posted by alleggerita:And usually french words less letter not pronounced..that's why Je vous aime is pronounced as zhuh voo zem..notice in the "voo" pronunciation the "s" tone was ignored..but it's not gone, the "s" instead went to the front of "aime"..hence notice that "saime" is "zem"..hope I didn't confuse you..
Yeah!! True..haha..wow, you actually know that..I learn french also forgot the liaison and elision thingy already..Originally posted by Kuali Baba:That's liaison. If the first letter of the word is a vowel or 'h', it takes on the sound of the last consonant of the preceding word.
With 't'aime', it's elision. Same as above except that the last letter of the preceding word is also a vowel, so the dropped vowel is replaced by the apostrophe.
