There are plenty of ways to say “I don’t give a f*&^ and the Canadian artist and electro queen simply known as Peaches says it with a crack of her leather whip (while togged out in a hotdog costume). It’s even harder to believe that the trash-talking, polysexual vamp was once a schoolteacher. Here, the sexy beast casts some light on her music, costumes and the second coming of Jesus Christ Superstar prior to her gig at Zirca that’s presented by Home Club and John Robinson.
Congratulations! We read that you’ve won “Favorite Electronic Artist of the Year” at the 10th Annual Independent Music Awards. So what does it feel like getting an award for your work? Yeah, that was strange because I happened to be in Toronto that week and no one even mentioned that I was even considered for this award and no one invited me to the ceremony.
Tell us more about the rock opera you did—Peaches Christ Superstar. Are you supposed to be the messiah or something? No it has nothing to do with that. I love this rock opera because the music is fantastic and I wanted to prove to myself I could sing the whole thing and bring the emotion to it without full on production. Wait … now I sound like a martyr.
What music did you listen to as a kid that influenced the sound you champion today? I loved disco, punk, classic rock and ‘80s pop. It all just kind of melded into one thing.
We’re curious to know why the electro-spiked sound is mostly associated with sex, kink, leather … What is your take on that? I think most popular music is either sex or love, so electro which is more club oriented seems to fit sex more than love for the club mood.
Do you have a guilty pleasure tune or band? Well, Jesus Christ Superstar is a huge guilty pleasure. I love big power ballads like “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.”
What is the funniest fancy dress piece you have worn while performing? I have worn everything from a child-sized pink dress to a hotdog costume.
What one artist would you most like to record a duet with? Kate Bush.
What can we expect from your upcoming gig in Singapore? It’s going to be explosive. My last solo gig was in Iceland last week. At the same time I was performing, a volcano exploded for the first time in 200 years so imagine what could have happened!—Zaki Jufri
