Marvelous .... we really ARE turning into second class citizens in our own home .....
I suppose only in Singapore, would you get such a thing happening ....
Anywhere else there'd be discrimination lawsuits ... This is so third world ......
nevermind, ... there are still plenty of other places to party in Singapore ...
he was requested to pay the $20 cover charge.
His four friends - from England, Germany, France and Finland - filed in for free.
The reason: They were foreign students on exchange in Singapore, while he was local.
He had planned a night of revelry with friends at St James Power Station last Saturday, but when National University of Singapore student Matthew Rao flashed his identity card (IC) at the door of the popular nightclub, he was requested to pay the $20 cover charge.
His four friends - from England, Germany, France and Finland - filed in for free.
The reason: They were foreign students on exchange in Singapore, while he was local.
"I thought the IC was for age verification, but the bouncers said I had to pay because it was proof I was Singaporean," Mr Rao, 25, recalled. He was upset because the policy seemed unfair and discriminatory.
"Why should foreign students get different treatment? If they live here, why shouldn't they pay as well?" he added.
Ms Cheryl Khong, marketing manager at St James, confirmed its policy of giving foreign guests free entry any day of the week if they produce a valid foreign student pass. The little-publicised policy has existed since St James opened in 2006, but it only applies to Powerhouse, the nightspot's main dance room.
Ms Khong said the policy aimed to "encourage a cosmopolitan party atmosphere for our young partygoers" and added that St James regularly hosts parties thrown by local tertiary institutions and students.
Still, Mr Rao said that the incident has changed his mind about frequenting theclub.
"I like rules that are fair and open. If the club can at least publicise those rules on the door, then I'll respect them."
yeee... powerhouse.....
me oni go dragonfly and movida one loh
aiyoh .. why fifi hand leg so fast one ...
This is the best country to live in for some people! lol.
Pffft...they can impose whatever rules they want, but it's our money and their loss. I didn't like the way they previously denied the lady who had cancer just because she wasn't young enough either.
Gee, so they discriminate against both 'old' people and locals. Wonder if they'll do so for looks in the future
actually .... some places do .....
they don't let in local guys that are too "good looking" ...

actually yes they do ....
two places I knew .... both now defunct .... had an implicit policy against local males ...
if you come in too "good looking" or too buffed looking .... basically, if they think you'd get action with the babes over the ang mohs at the place, they'd come up with all sorts of excuses not to let you in ... they'd tell you something cock, like it's members night only (nevermind that your friends just waltzed through) ... or that T-shirts are not allowed (oh ? what was that ang moh before me wearing ?) ... or that the entry age's 27 for guys (WTF !)
Pulling in a nightclub is a cliched phenomenon that never seems to go away.
They have dropped the cover charge for all tertiary students now, but the damage has already been done.
to be fair to denis foo, this policy of discrimination against locals is implicit at many other places too ... his only mistake was to make it overt ....
Were you on the receiving end of that treatment at those defunct nightspots?
I haven't had a similar experience of either kind to speak of yet.
cheers to membership~

that was a long time, 25 kilos, and a lot more hair ago .... but my ego's not big enough for that okie, I knew a chap, an indian fellow, who worked as a bouncer at ____ just before they went defunct .... I called him up to scream at him on his night off .... i got in after mentioning the fellow to his colleagues of course, but I never went back there again ...
another place, which I shall not name also .... discriminated against NS botaks ....
you'd NEVER see a botak in there .....
