I was thinking about the pubs along boat quay and clarke quay and how they used to be godowns. but they have since been gentrified (renovated and made to look beautiful) and their purpose made more trivial. This made me think of the gentrified areas around Singapore i.e. CHIJMES and how they all might have lost their historical value. Do you suppose this has serious social repurussions on us Singaporeans? Since we have nothing to strive for anymore, we try to enhance our culture but our culture has morphed into something distinctly Singaporean yet they want us to keep our roots in China, India, Malaysia...etc. what does this mean? How about the fact that all the beautiful houses along Nassim Road, Cluny Road, Camden Park etc, are all Greecian or European in some form and not oriental? 'Cept for the occasional Balinese style houses like the one near Kheam Hock Road, all our beautiful houses of the rich and famous are ang-mohfied. Are we rootless then?
