Seeing - Jose SaramagoWhat if in a democratic election, a huge majority of the voters decide to cast a blank vote?
Saramago writes of a typical government, faced with the embarassing and distressing situation where the electorate has decided that the government are inconsequential and vote according.
The cynicism and contempt for the people where subterfuge, intrigue, deception, and worse is carried out in order to "make the people see light".
A scary and dystopian society where people decide that enough is enough; and the lengths which the people in power will go to, and the depths of which they will sink, bode ill for the future as the reader will be able to see (and be unable to dismiss) that their own leaders can be capable of such things.
If this book is read, it could lead to realisation of what it means to be a responsible citizenry.
Brilliant but the style of writing is not to the reviewer's liking.
