Freehold is a science-fiction book which is also a social commentary told in a story about being disenfranchised, in a backdrop of a military conflict but in a personal tone where a woman is framed, exiled, lost, found and finds her place in a universe where there is great personal conflict while humanity goes insane.
Kendra Pacelli is framed for embezzlement, is used as a political pawn and flees to a world where she feels a stranger but grows to call home. With friends, lovers, and a training in the military which pushes her to superhuman efforts, her story is a offers a different look at what we might be, what we are and what we have become.
Flawed in many ways but still readable, the author offers a vision of what seems a hellish and mercenary world, but essentially the goodness of humanity if given a chance to make a choice.
Enjoyable, recommended. 3 3/4 out of 5
