The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Steven Chbosky
A slightly mentally ill boy writes to an anonymous person a series of letters chronicling a time in his life where things are changing in High School. His friends are all older than him and he has a hard time talking to people his age.
When the school year ends, upheavals in his life in the form of his closest friends moving on to college and other revelations like sex, drugs, life and everything else takes a toll on him.
It is a moving tale which is told in a series of letters. It does not rely on resorting to pandering and sympathy found in many books which have people who are not "whole" as protagonists. Perhaps because of this, the reader is rewarded by a tale which is more human and humane.
