i have a few...
William Gibson.. who wrote books like Neuromancer, Burning Chrome, Virtual Light..
he wrote about things we are running headlong towards... where the internet, virtual reality and things electronic were unknown.. and he was a total computer illiterate when he wrote these books... and "the father of cyberspace"... his latest is Pattern Recognition..
another is:
Banana Yoshimoto.. who wrote a whole lot of books like Kitchen, Lizard, N.P. and Amrita..
she writes with a quirky sense of humour.. subtly taking you into the story and you can't help but start to care about the characters... very VERY recommended... i think Rhonda has dibs on my collection -

As of last weekend, I believe I've read everything he's written. Discworld consistently entertains me. I adore the series!
Some other authors that comes to mind are the more popular chick lit authors like Fielding, Kinsella and Evanovich.... Rowling too. I've finished a few fantasy series but they're too long ago to mention. -

Frank Herbert whose Dune series, to me, remains unsurpassed.. dare i say, his series reads a lot better than Tolkien's series...
