mathematics: a very short introduction
- A concise explanation of the differences between advanced mathematics and what we learn at school
- Offers the reader an insight into such seemingly paradoxical concepts as infinity, the square root of minus one, and curved space
- Tackles the sociological questions that arise regarding the mathematical community - e.g. 'Do mathematicians burn out at the age of 25?'
- Clear and non-technical language throughout
- The author received a Fields Medal for Mathematics in 1998, awarded for 'the most daring, profound and stimulating research done by young mathematicians'
[b]Description
'a marvellously lucid guide to the beauty and mystery of numbers' -Gilbert Adair
This book aims to explain, in clear non-technical language, what it is that mathematicians do, and how that differs from and builds on the mathematics that most people are familiar with from school. It is the ideal introduction for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of mathematics.
Readership
People who regret not learning more mathematics; people who are fascinated by popular science books, but are left wishing they understood them better; people contemplating doing a mathematics-related degree; people who would like to talk about mathematics in an informed way without having to learn technical details.

started to read it around 5:30pm and i'm already midway through it...
but, it's hard to put down... but i will...
going to start on [b]The Code Book by Simon Singh about the science and secrecy from ancient egypt to quantum cryptography.. his other book, Fermat's Last Theorem was an excellent book!
sheesh.. the things i do so as to stretch out the Totto-chan book

I think so too ah pek n you too!!Originally posted by the Bear:i think ahpek is masochistic
people already say i am for reading the Fermat's Last Theorem book but it's more like a storybook than anything with math thrown in
Originally posted by care bear:I think so too ah pek n you too!!
who would want to read a story book with math thrown in???!!!
okie, if I see it in the bookstore, I will pick it up and flip through....but only because of you i'm still not too convincedOriginally posted by the Bear:aww.. c'mon.. give it a try one of these days
it's really good.. all about how mathematical obsessions shaped the lives of a lot of people...
if archimedes can be so engrossed in a math problem that he did not hear a centurion yell at him, and ended up being run through, it has to be good
but there are stories.. like how, to pythagora's shame, he had a student drowned because the student (correctly) contradicted his teachings... and how Catherine the Great supported her "mathematical cyclops" Euler
great stories in them

Ah Pek.....you very funny.....Originally posted by OldAhPek:Actually that is really a good book
Why do i say that?
1)Everytime i read it, i get really frustrated
then i wld cry....
they say... crying makes u healthier
2)It makes me feel damn stupid... coz i cant understand a single crap
I get to know myself better, that eveyone have their limits
it make me a more humble person
3)Usually when i touch the book... that means exam is coming
Because i dont understand.... and get really panic
my heart pumps faster... that is a good cardiovascular exercise
4)Anguish, disillusion....... so start cursing and some finger action and banging on table. Exercise muscle.... improve my articulation and my hokkian languange too
5)...
...
etc etc
