I think you have to locate which temple is suitable for you yourself.
For starters,I downloaded mantras like The Great Compassion and Buddhist songs from Youtube.I think in Geylang, quite a lot of temples.
But how do I differentiate the different schools of teachings like Tibetan, etc?
So what are the steps when I am in the temple?
In the West, there is this famous Buddhist Temple, beside the firestation, 15mins walk from the Clementi MRT. They host talks, seminar, chanting session and a library with many books.
法团 Buddhist Youth Mission.
I mean what to do when I enter the temple.
Leogirl....Do you know the place well? What should I do when I am there?
for beginners, just clasp your palms together and pay respect.
Go straight to the office to enquire what are the latest events, activities you can join in.
you can read about the temple on their website
http://www.sbym.org.sg/
this is the friendly youthful buddhist temple in the west that i can recommend you.
Poh Ming Tse is another temple in the West that is both english and mandarin friendly .

Do I have to chant, bow or say anything at the altar?

What is a troll?I am sincere.

Hi Steak, no offense because there are alway people come here for attention lol!
anyway... back to your thread... maybe you can read about the 4 Noble Truths first, and think about it. Does it relate to you in your everyday life?
When I first stepped into fo tang, i was also blur like sotong haha... I don't even know how to prostrate before Buddha. I was just monkey-see-monkey-do haha...
It took me abit of courage to step in and explore... because I was alone, and all the people there are strangers to me... of course I was wary and cautious too. But at the same time, I need to know what they do... you need to have abit of courage to speak and ask around.. I'm sure there will be helpful people around to guide you in fo tangs.
then come to chanting of sutras, I don't even know what was i reading... but I just keep going... slowly I understood its meaning bit by bit. You need some patience and diligence to reap the benefits. There's no shortcut in learning Buddhism.
Hope you have a nice learning journey ahead :)
many of us are Tao-Buds instead...
But how do I know which temple teach Theravada or Mahayana teachings?
If I put a Buddhist statue at home.....Where can I get it and is there anything I need to do every morning or every night?
What I mean is like offer joss sticks or chant the compassion mantra before the statue everyday.

With regards to etiquette at a temple, there is actually this stickied topic you may find useful. It is found near the top of the various topic headers on this forum, so you can always refer back to it.
There is also useful information on it regarding altar rituals. It should be more than enough to get you started. You can buy a statue of the Buddha at Buddhist artifact shops at Waterloo Street or at the Geylang area.

actually for beginner try to understand the Buddhism faith is the most important task. u can try attending Buddhish fellowship http://www.buddhistfellowship.org/cms/ as the group is English speaking in nature. A lot of youth and working professional. The topic share is quite relevant daily living. however, if u are into devotional aspect, then u can try Mahanayana temple. It tend to concentrate on Chanting and most sharing is done in Chinese. In fact, some temple has started to conduct sharing in English. last but not least, if u r into Lotus Sutra, u can visit my temple too http://nichiren-shu.org/TNearYou/asia.html#singa
