To me, one follow a specific tradition is simply trying to learn step by step.... if a person have the knowledge and ability to handle all tradition or no tradition is something to rejoice.. Good for you.. for me, "newbie" cant follow without tradition i get very confused.
well you need to follow the tradition of the Buddha and the Dhamma, that is enough. afterall, ask yourself, do you aspire to be a buddha to save sentient beings or to achieve end of suffering? if you aspire to be a buddha, you need to start practising perfections. for example giving, you need to perfect giving until you are ready to give up everything, even your life, wife, children, properties, money, even your ego and pride etc. you need aeons to perfect. some even said you can be a buddha in this lifetime, but how can that be. use common sense can know you need to practise the perfections before you are ready to be a buddha.
