Hi all, my computer began to have some problems about 2 weeks ago. The specs are:
3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 Prescott with Intel 865GV Chipset ASRock Motherboard (P4i65GV) 512 DDR-400 RAM (Single DIMM) 80GB Seagate HDD AOpen CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive Nvidia FX 5200 card Windows XP Professional Dell 17" Monitor
Firstly, it could not boot up properly after someone else did not wait for the comp to shutdown fully and switch off the power when the shutdown screen still at "Windows is shutting down". The comp would always go to the screen with the XP logo and loading bar and then a blue screen will just flash past and the comp will restart again. The error on the blue screen is UNBOOTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.
Then, problem 2 came. I used a bootable Windows installation disk to repair the Windows. This time, the computer can boot to Windows. However, the problem is that everytime it booted to the Welcome screen, the mouse cursor will first appear (part 2.1), then it will take the comp about 2~3 mins to go to the hourglass cursor and another good 5 mins before the accounts appear. When I login, the Windows is jerky. Whenever I move my mouse around, the cursor would be jerky before going back to the normal speed and be jerky again. Sometimes, the OS will just get stuck at the stage when the mouse cursor appears first before a black screen (refer to part 2.1).
Even then, when I get into the OS, the screen will black out before flickering on again. After a certain time interval (although not consistent), the computer will just freeze altogether and I have to do a manual reboot (with the keyboard not even responding to the Num Lock button and etc).
I sent it back to the shop where I bought from Sim Lim. The guys were very nice and backed up my data before reformatting the partition that the OS was in and flashed their copy of Windows XP Pro on that partition. They also managed to detect certain viruses in the disk and helped me cleaned them up.
Just when I thought the comp would work fine, problem 2 cropped up 3 days ago when I was playing FIFA 2005. The game froze and I had to restart the comp. Then, the problem degenerated back to before the partition was reformatted.
I tried to install Norton Systemworks 2005 on the comp. However, everytime it reached the part when the installer shows "Updating components registration" the installer will say that Norton Systemworks 2005 cannot install and I have to abort the installation. Although I did a manual look at the folders which previously contained the viruses, I found no traces of these viruses.
Although it seemed as if there are 2 separate problems, I cannot help but think that both problems are connected. What is the root cause of the OS' problem? I think the system did say something like a device driver caused an error, but what is the true root cause of the problem? I do not want to reformat the drive as I do not want to lose my crucial data in the HDD as well as a reformat of the drive has proven useless with the problem cropping up again.
All help appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Your computer is haunted...haha..but seriously.. i really cant see why even after a reformat your computer still behaves this way..
Have you been surfing porn or warez sites with Internet Explorer?
Gazette05
Nope... Although I must say that I discontinued my antivirus subscription about 6 mths ago and I go to serials.ws for serials for certain software, although I use Firefox...

Nvm, thx for all the feedback. It has been the graphics card that is screwing up. Sent it back for repairs already. Thanks for all the help!
