The MTR Corporation says it will extend the East Rail Line across the harbour as part of its HK$60 billion Shatin-to-Central Link project.
That means passengers can ride all the way from Lo Wu to Admiralty station without changing trains when the line starts operating in around nine years' time. The railway expects the link to ease both rail and road traffic in the long term. And while some roads in Hung Hom and Wan Chai may have to be diverted temporarily to make way for construction, the Corporation is confident the impact will be minimal. |

A bus driver whose speeding double-decker toppled on to its side, killing two passengers, has been jailed in the District Court for four years and eight months for dangerous driving causing death. Chan Kwok-Fai was also banned from driving for three years. The incident happened in Tseung Kwan O in late 2009. The judge said the public expected the courts to tackle "the serious social evil of dangerous driving." |

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Matthew Cheung, says there's no room for further adjustments to the transport subsidy scheme. The government plans to widen the eligibility rules to enable an extra 40,000 low income-workers to benefit.
But critics say this is not generous enough, and unionist lawmakers have called for Friday's Finance Committee vote on the scheme to be adjourned. But Mr Cheung said that would only mean a delay in paying the travel allowance for the 380,000 people who will be eligible. He called on legislators to take a prudent approach on the issue. |

The Liberal Party says it will oppose the government's funding request for the transport subsidy scheme to be expanded, if it does not make further concessions. The government's proposed a HK$600 monthly travel allowance for low-income workers who pass a means test.
But the party's chairwoman, Miriam Lau, says the scheme in its current form is flawed and will discourage some people from working. She said the government should revise the scheme by also considering applicants' income on an individual basis. |

It's been revealed that the MTRC did not report the majority of cracks found in rail tracks during the past three years. The Corporation said this was because most of the incidents did not affect train safety or services. At the same time, a pressure group has called for an independent probe into train delays and disruptions. |

The government has made last-minute changes to its transport subsidy scheme for lower income families, in a bid to get it passed by the Finance Committee today. A majority of councillors said earlier this week that they would not back the scheme. The government is now proposing to raise the monthly income cap for a two-person household from HK$10,000 to HK$12,000.
It will also allow part-time workers to apply for half of the HK$600 monthly subsidy. The Secretary for Labour, Matthew Cheung, said the revisions would benefit more people. However, unionist legislator Lee Cheuk-yan said the revised proposals were still unsatisfactory. He said the government should widen the scheme further by accepting both family and individual applications. |

The Transport Department has said the ferry services from Hung Hom to Wan Chai and Central will cease on Thursday, as no tender submissions have been received to continue operating the routes. The Star Ferry company earlier declined to renew its licence to run the services, saying they were losing too much money.
A department spokesman said alternative forms of transport were available, and that the frequency of number 115 cross-harbour buses would be increased. The Democratic Party has called on the government to preserve the ferry routes. |

MTR services on the Tsuen Wan line were affected during the morning rush hour following a signalling failure between the Prince Edward and Mongkok stations.
The fault occured at 8.30 this morning. Because of the problem, trains heading towards Central had to travel at a slower speed from Sham Shui Po to Mongkok -- resulting in an extra journey time of three minutes. A spokesman said repairs are under way. Trains are now running according to their normal non-peak schedules, and are operating at intervals of four-minutes. |

The Executive Council has awarded the MTRC two plots of land to help offset the HK$17.7 billion cost of two new rail projects -- the South Island Line and the Kwun Tong Extension. Announcing Exco's approval of the projects, Transport Secretary Eva Cheng said the sites for property development would compensate the Corporation for having to shoulder the cost of designing, building and running the two lines.
One site in Wong Chuk Hang will be used to build small to medium-sized flats, while the other -- at the former Valley Road Estate in Homantin -- will have a lowered plot ratio to limit the size and height of the development. The South Island line will run from Admiralty to Ap Lei Chau, while the Kwun Tong extension will connect Yau Ma Tai and Whampoa. Construction is expected to be completed in 2015. The Transport Secretary also said construction of another line, the Shatin-to-Central link, may be delayed because of a court battle over the way environmental impact assessment reports were carried out. Miss Cheng said it's still not clear how the project would be affected if the assessement had to redone. |

The environmental group, Green Sense, has accused the government of maladministration in the way it decided to give a plot of land in Wong Chuk Hang to the MTR Corporation to offset the cost of building the South Island Line. In lodging a complaint with the Ombudsman, the group's Project Manager, Ho Ka-po, said it was not opposed to the construction of the line -- but was concerned that the government had used what's called the "Greenfield Site Principle" to calculate the value of the land where a station would be built. |

An MTRC general manager, Jeny Yeung, said concessionary fares would continue to be provided for the young, the elderly and the disabled. Ms Yeung said that in July the company would be introducing a new "Ride HK$100 for a free ticket" promotion which will last six months. Adult Octopus card holders who spend $100 on MTR fares from Monday to Friday, within the same week, will be able to redeem a single journey ticket worth up to $30. |
