Angry commuters have criticised the MTR's handling of a power failure which caused travel chaos on the Tsuen Wan line during this morning's rush hour. At one stage, hundreds of people were queuing for shuttle buses to take them between stations. The MTR has apologised to the affected passengers.
The three-hour disruption occurred after a power cable broke, halting services between Jordan and Yau Mei Tei. The frequency of Jordan to Central trains was reduced to about four minutes. Passengers complained of confusion and long waits for shuttle buses linking Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui stations |

The MTR Corporation will instal around 40 lifesaving defibrillators at ten of its busy stations next month. The company said the automated external defibrillator, also known as an AED, would provide immediate aid to passengers suffering from cardiac arrest. A senior MTR official, Ivan Lai, said the company would conduct a review to determine whether to instal defibrillators at all MTR stations. |

Construction work to expand Admiralty MTR station will start next year. The station will be extended to Harcourt Garden. The MTR Corporation says the expanded station, to be completed in 2015, will serve as an interchange station for four railway lines - the existing Island and Tsuenwan lines, as well as the future South Island and Shatin to Central links.
The design manager for the South Island line, Peter Leung, said they would instal many new escalators to connect the lines. Harcourt Garden will be closed during the construction period. But Mr Leung said that afterwards, they would open a new elevated garden with a better environment. |

The Executive Council has approved two major railway projects that will extend the MTR network to Aberdeen, Ho Man Tin, Hung Hom and Whampoa.
The estimated cost of the new South Island Line, and the Kwun Tong Line Extension, is expected to total about $18 billion - 60 percent higher than the railway's original estimates. Details are being finalised and construction is due to start next year, with the expected completion date set for 2015. The new South Island Line will connect Admiralty Station with South Horizons, in Aberdeen. New stops will be built at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang, and Lei Tung Estate, with the entire journey taking about 10 minutes compared with up to 45 minutes on the road at present during rush hour. Across the Harbour, the existing Kwun Tong Line will be extended from Yau Ma Tei, to Ho Man Tin and Whampoa, enabling residents there to cut travel times from up to 25 minutes, to just five. The MTRC's latest cost estimates for both lines combined total up to $18.2 billion, but final adjustments in the design of the project could push costs up further. This compares with an original estimate - in 2007 - of $11.2 billion. The adjustment is being attributed to a surge in construction costs. Sites have been reserved for the MTRC to build residential developments on both lines, and a Government spokesman said the administration would carefully scrutinize the railway's development proposals to ensure that funding support is 'fair and reasonable.' |

The Labour Secretary, Matthew Cheung, says it's fairer to base eligibility for travel subsidies on total household income, rather than individual income. The government earlier announced that it would provide HK$600 a month in travel subsidies to all low-income workers who pass a means test.
Mr Cheung said the system proposed by the government would prevent abuse. However, a Democratic Party lawmaker, Wong Sing-chi, told Joey Kwok that some people who used to get a travel allowance from the government may now no longer be eligible, because of the new assessment mechanism. |

Legislators have expressed concern over plans by taxi and tram operators to raise fares. The taxi operators want a HK$2 increase in the flagfall, while Hong Kong Tramways has asked for a 25-percent rise in the basic fare. Legislators said the government should implement measures to offset the surge in operating costs. |
