Dogs suddenly bark and growl at main door...but

My main door is left open most of the time when I am at home, with the gates locked.
Just now just seconds before 12 midnight, suddenly both my dogs rushed to the main door and growl, to show agression.
I went to the main door. There is no one standing there.
I quickly close the main door.
