Is it sensitive to ask ppl what is their pay?

I find it perfectly fine to tell ppl what is my take-home pay range.
But I am surprised that some ppl are offended when they are asked this question, when we work in totally different work.
Even some of my own colleagues avoid this question and hide their payslips.
Is it rude to ask ppl what is their pay? -

most pple dont talk about it
thats why on a lot of those survey thingies, there is usually a 'dont want to reveal' kinda option when it comes to the 'whats your salary' question... -

hmm.. some people are just over carious... But i do know some companies have a binding agreement with employee that they should never disclose their pay matter or they will face some action....
