How to save energy on computers at home?

  I surf and chat anytime around the day and I hope to leave my PC on most of the time.
  But I know that is going to burn a hole in my pocket where electrical bill in concern.
  
  My fd leave his PC on most of the time and he told me something about putting the system (hard disk) to some mode and it will save energy if you do not do anything with it. But the system will be ready for any incoming msn msg. I am a computer idiot and I dun quite understand.
  
  Any idea how its done?

  Just turn off your b|00dy monitor lar, why you want to stress your hdd instead?

  I set the monitor to saver mode where it turns off aft 2 minutes of inactvity. Turn off takes a longer time for the screen to start up.
  You mean turn off will save more power?

  Yes. There's an on/off switch on your monitor right? Use that one and scrap that saver mode. Why give your graphics card that kind of strain?
