Is it rude to ask ppl how much is their pay?

I have asked and some ppl are very uncomfortable to tell their pay...not even a rough figure. Some are even defensive...
Is it rude to ask? -
If u follow social etiquette, i guess the answer is yes
But then, i dont think its a problem among family members or close friends -

But I'm from a different school of thought. -
I have met some ppl who have no prob telling you.
ButI have met some who look buay song when I ask casually...
Its not as if I will take advantage of them when you have a higher pay -

well.. here's a good gauge, when you ask questions like this, you dont want the other party to feel bad, because if they do, you will get fucked up faces and answers.
heres what i'd suggest, only ask if you're sure the other party is comfortable.
eg, ask those that you think will feel proud/humble to reveal their pay. -
depends,close friends should be ok.
not so close and for kaypo relatives maybe give figures like 1k++ or 2k++ or something like that.
If it is someone from within the same company,it should be taboo to ask such $$ as it may affect morale of fellow collegue. -

Coming back to the point, i think the HR specifically tell you or is in your terms and conditions that YOU are NOT supposed to divulge your pay to other people in the firm.
This is to prevent dissention in the ranks and people getting unhappy, like why same grade, same qualifications, but different pay, etc.
But as companies more and more follow the standard pay structure, this becomes more or less clearer as how much your pay is when you reach this position or grade etc.

It has been a tradition that has passed down generation to generation that asking about salary is "rude".
