Hi All,
Hope you all may render some help/advice to me.
To cut the story short, i'm 33/m and have no working experience. I ORDed when I was 24 and for 9 years i was more or less jobless. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. 5 years back in 2008, I got an entry-level contract IT job...but I only worked for 1 month then resigned. Reason being I thought I could use it as an excuse to defer my reservist stint at that point in time. Savings all gone and I'm leeching on my mom who gives me monthly allowance. I know you may be shocked or something, but I'm open to what you have to say to help me get my life back on track. Everyday I wake up feeling aimless and as you know, it's a great waste of time. I've a dip in elect engrg and that's all I have, but it's probably pointless anyway since it's been a long time since I graduated. -
u can be 9 yrs more or less jobless??????

I would say find a job, accept whatever low pay they give you and gain experience from there.
Although I have to say it's going to be really hard unless you can substantiate that you have some other form of life experience that is applicable for the work environment.

Your profession is being a leech... your mom works for you, for free.
The question is , do you want to work for someone ? Answer: you don't.
As long as you have no bills to pay.. easy money to spend.. you arn't gonna find a job.
The only way.. is to wait for your mom to die... when the money runs out , you may perhaps see the value of keeping a long term job.
But for the moment... you are quite comfy where you are right now.

think of what you want to do for your career...try out something first...if not right, then switch till you find the right one, rather than sitting at home loafing around and leeching on your mum. there are plenty of entry level jobs out there, be it accounts job, admin job, marketing job, sales job.... just do something worthwhile and don;t waste your life away like that. else one day you will find yourself too lazy to find yourself a job anymore. that will be too late. i am sure you can find a job. it is a matter of choice.

dont really understand what advise you want?
a Diploma holder... means you have an education, can serve NS means you some how or rather you are fit.....
So the balance is your attitute, keng recervist shows you have no responsibility.. for 9 yrs rely on mother for money... confirm you have no responsibility...

At this point in time I don't think you have much choice. Ideally you might want to be an engineer but without the relaxant experience and the gap of 9 years, what you are looking for might not come easily.
if I'm you, I'll take up whoever is willingly to offer me, even service jobs like waiters and crew at MacDonalds. You'll be able to work up to become captains or floor managers. You might also want to consider joining uniform service like prison officers or security specialist at Cisco and such.
Hope u will be able to get on your two feet as soon as possible. The more time you waste, the more difficult it's going to get.

wad your problem?????yer mom sick or r u sick?best u go apply for low level job n then go progress to normal level again.the ministry of manpower has got companies waiting to employ people on technician level to supervisor.its on internet from what i saw years ago.if its too far then u just have to rough it out because u let 9 years pass by u.best u start from bottom because u like let 9 years escape from u.
just dont let 9 years slip from your hands again.

and how n what did u do for 9 years???prison???IMH??
these are stuff that most companies would mark u down.....so best u get a job....n try to smile n sound happy n normal!
dont sound like u just came out from a coffin after digging yerself out.a smile n a happy voice is what most employers look for.that may sound hard as we are all from singapore n is kinda unnatural to us sadly....try yer best to sound happy and smiling during interviews n phone calls.that will help u a lot rather than serious ,stoic and highly stressed person!
i would try fast food outlets if cant get into nice cushy job in electronics....they tend to promote people with diploma faster.

so interviewer ask me the dreaded 'what have u been doing' question, how to answer?

as an adult....................tell them u send resume but didnt get any reply.....probably due to too many foreigners in spore which is the usual thing in spore.
or u could tell them u setup your own dot com company
or tell them something that make sense from 9 years of work absence.,,,as in too dangerous work......recessions one after another which did happened in less than 10 years.......just tell them u couldnt figure out why u were left out of workforce.

so experience. know what interviewer will ask, not noob this one.so what? tell interviewr the truth lah!
singapore is not a welfare society. the age of the person with such issue makes no difference.
but if you wanna slack dont slack on others expenses.
from what i see youslack shiok but the depending income should be gone alredy, that's why come forum whine.

Hi joblesskia. I just read your story. I think your family is very wealthy. In Singapore if you don't work you will not be able to survive unless your family is very wealthy. Is it true?

Employers KNOW lies and stupid excuses dished out by applicants. Every B.S you came up with will cause TS to loss his chance at employment.
9 years of failure is not going to be so easily covered up by a bunch of lame lies.
TS is either too lazy, stupid, or has mental illness to get and hold down a job. You think employers wouldn't see that ?

TS more or less is gone case...start off from scratch at age of 33? taxi driving might be the only way out.

what would your solution be?what should he tell the interviewer?????it wont be easy covering up unless he has proof such as in business or even product he is doing for years ..show documented proof using a video or photo if interviewer insists.
lame lies???well they are not lies if he did any one of them.holding down a job is tough in spore where employers are spoilt for choice.in most cases violence works best in most sporean werkplaces unfortunately.
as an adult he should choose his path and think of his own excuses.....lies n excuses are different altogether.he should start from scratch as a fresh diploma holder and even lower his expectations of salary to most singaporean jobseeker dismay.

best he could try work at supermarket like ntuc or shop and save to earn $$$.it pays the bills than folks labeling him permanently as lazy etc etc..Worse he could do is end up as a supervisor at a petrol station after werking years there!
As an american u shouldnt say this to your fellow sporeans.....he may be weak and needs help which only the strong and brilliant can provide.
sporean isnt nazism where the weak is based on surviviale of the fittest.there is still an asian influence based on good,bad and kindness in this otherwise imperfect and flawed world which is far from fair.

jojobeach....he mentioned fear which means he values his life.what do u want to do ???kill him???see him writhing in agony while his mother cries and they both go broke???
the reason why i left spore was because most people in spore are not only nasty ,apathic,black in the heart and most of all >>>weak.
and worse of all they demand me to fight for them while taking away my time,career and all sort of help needed.
