1.A COMPETE UNDERWATER OFFER
" Torpedoes
As a member of the Eurotorp
consortium, DCNS offers its expertise
in the torpedo field. Besides the Mu-
90 light torpedoes, already in service
among many navies, DCNS offers the
F21 heavy guided torpedoes derived
from the BlackShark. Thanks to its
excellent endurance (+50 km), high
speed (+50 knots) as well as a
military payload with a high level of
protection stabilisation, these
torpedoes have already been ordered
by several navies, among which
those of Italy, Chile, Portugal,
Malaysia and Singapore.EOQ

DCNS and WASS, the Italian
fi rm, are developing the heavy Black
Shark F21 torpedo. That wire-guided 1.5-
ton and 6m long, 533mm caliber torpedo aims at acting as much as an ASF than
as an ASM. Its a Saft AgO/AI very high energy density battery, associated to contra-rotating propellers, enables it to
reach 50 knots, with a low level radiated noise. It could allege-
dly dive down to a depth of 1,000m and have a range of 50km. Its multifrequency
acoustic active/passive warhead boasts a fl at network sensor. The French requi-
rements have been assessed at 93 Black Shark.EOQ

SUBMARINE DEMINING
K-STER ROBOTS
In mid-2009 will start the delivery by
ECA to India of 150 K-Ster mine war-
fare robots, ordered some months ago to
equip the four Karwar class mine hun-
ters of the Indian Navy. India has also put
out an RFP for eight mine hunters and
ECA is ready to propose its K-Ster robot.
At the end of 2008, a Baltic navy will pro-
bably order two mine hunters and ECA
proposes to equip them with 40 K-Ster
robots. In 2009, ECA has serious pros-
pects in South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia
and Singapore (two Bedok vessels to
equip). A ship will generally carry some
20 K-Ster robots : 18 carry an explosive
charge (white head) and are consuma-
bles used to detonate mines ; the other
two (yellow heads) are used to detect
and identify mines. With a mass of 50
kg/110 lbs, and carrying a camera and a
sonar, they move at 6 knots and can dive
to 300 meters/975 feet. (Stand B13)EOQ

''F21® next-generation heavyweight torpedo for the French Navy
In a few years, the current-generation F17 Mod2 heavyweight torpedoes carried by the French Navy’s nuclear-powered submarines will
be replaced by the next-generation F21. The new torpedo (length: 6 metres) is based on the BlackShark, but goes faster for longer.
Major innovations include the DCNS-developed PB50 primary battery using an AgO/Al (silver oxide/aluminium) technology offering a far
higher energy density than the silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) batteries used by other torpedoes. “The warhead uses a high-stability explosive that is
immune to accidental detonation, hence safer for the submarine and its crew. Overall, the F21 combines state-of-the-art technologies to meet
the dual requirements of high performance and low cost of ownership,” says Loïc Beaurepaire, DCNS’s marketing manager for underwater weapons.''
