By-election a must for PM's moral authority Singapore Democrats |
The Prime Minister cannot avoid calling for a by-election in Punggol East SMC without inflicting severe damage to his and his party's political and moral standing.
Mr Michael Palmer resigned not just as a Member of Parliament but also as Speaker. His stepping down has left a gaping hole in the legislature that cannot be ignored or papered over. More importantly, voters of Punggol East have been badly let down and they deserve the opportunity to elect another representative.
For these reasons, PM Lee Hsien Loong must call an election in the constituency and soon.
Governance requires not just political but also moral authority. Without moral authority, the PM will find his power undermined and challenged from within and outside of his party. Singaporeans will lose even more confidence in his leadership and ability to take our country forward. The end-result is that our nation will go further in the wrong direction. A by-election is the only way that Mr Lee can stem the erosion of his moral authority.
Of course, Mr Lee is anxious to avoid elections especially at this time. For all his expressions of contrition and promises to make amends at the end of the last general elections, nothing has changed. It is nearly two years since the 2011 GE and Mr Lee's broken promises are still fresh in the minds of Singaporeans:
Wages are still down, inflation is running up, HDB prices continue to escalate, public transport is still as crowded, healthcare costs remain as expensive as ever and the PAP is going ahead with its dangerous plan of bringing in more and more foreigners even though our country cannot sustain it.
Singaporeans are fed up. They want change. The SDP stands at the vanguard of change. We have advocated a series of alternative policy plans that have given our fellow Singaporeans a clear view of what that change looks like. We want:
The SDP has been working to raise the standard of opposition politics in Singapore and to be the party that Singaporeans are looking for: competent, constructive and compassionate.

CSJ has no right to speak of "moral authority"
hell! the SDP have proven themselves to be more a hinderance to Singapore's development than anything else
anyway, by taking in Gomez, they have united the moles of the MIW and hopefully they become more irrelevant as time passes until they in turn pass until they're just a blip in the history of Singapore

Former constituency director of Pasir Ris West Constituency Office, Laura Ong, was 'also dating another man' while involved with Michael Palmer.
According to sources close to Ms Ong, she was serious relationship with another man that allegedly began before her affair with Michael Palmer began.
This relationship apparently began before her involvement with Mr Palmer, as early as two years ago, when Ms Ong started receiving gifts from the man she had met in the Punggol South ward, where he used to be a grassroots volunteer and where she was a constituency director from 2006 to 2011.
The man, Andy Lim, who is in early 30s, is a logistics manager and had in all likelihood discovered that his lover was dating another man, added the sources close to Ms Laura Ong. A friend of Ms Ong's told The Straits Times that Mr Lim couldn't be contacted since the scandal broke.
Mr Lim wrote on his LinkedIn profile that he works as an area service manager in a logistics firm, a post he has held since January 2011. He joined the firm in 2006. He is an alumnus of the Anglo-Chinese School and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
Ms Ong and Mr Lim became more open about their relationship as it developed, disclosing it to a circle of close friends. They also posted on Facebook photos of a trip to Legoland Malaysia two weeks ago.
Laura Ong is married but separated from her husband of six years while Michael Palmer has been married for 15 years to wife Diane.
Laura Ong has since tendered her resignation on Dec 10, citing family commitments. On Dec 12, the news broke of MP for Punggol East and Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer's resignation over an extramarital affair with a member of the People's Association (PA).
Intimate SMSes and e-mails allegedly exchanged between Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer and People's Association (PA) member Laura Ong also surfaced, including a message confirming a booking at the Fairmont Singapore.
Several photos of former People's Association staff member Laura Ong with Minister of State Teo Ser Luck are also currently making the rounds online. These were taken during a grassroots retreat in Beijing, China in 2010, clarified Mr Teo.
grassroot retreat go to beijing
fucking hell
dont waste our taxpayers money if cant produce anything
Ok so the character assassination begins! Destroy the woman and mitigate the damage to Palmer. Anyway, wtf's a constituency director? smlj one? It seems to me that there are a lot of such rubbish positions in the PA.
