Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the high inflation rate does not reflect the reality for average Singaporeans. (AFP file photo)
The high inflation rate does not reflect the reality for average Singaporeans, said Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Speaking at the May Day dinner on Sunday, Tharman said that, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by about 5.2 per cent in March in this year from the same month last year, “it does not mean that the average Singaporean will feel this high inflation”.
He explained that people who already own homes and are not buying new cars are not affected, because more than half of the inflation is due to higher cost of new car ownership and higher housing rents.
Tharman added that the increase in prices for daily necessities and essential services, such as food, clothing and education, has been “much more moderate”, at 3 per cent or lower.
Therefore, the inflation in actual household expenditures for most Singaporeans is lower than 5 per cent, he pointed out.
Nevertheless, he said the government is taking steps to tame inflation and is closely monitoring the situation, he said.
For example, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has been gradually strengthening the value of the Singapore dollar to reduce the impact of imported inflation.
In addition, the government is providing some help for lower-income Singaporean households to cope with the rising cost of living, added Tharman, citing the recently introduced goods and services tax (GST) vouchers.
However, he said Singapore can expect more cost pressures as business wages rise amid the tight labour market.
“There will be pressure on consumer prices this year and the next few years,” he said.

They are harnessing additional revenue to help the poor.
I am not a small business owner - how to evade tax? GST is to collect tax from every one so that the poor could be helped without frightening away the rich. govt needs the rich to provide

Can you explain how it helps the poor?
Same thing, please explain how CPF monies can be stretched so that we can live longer to enjoy it.
CPF - false illusion that you have lots of money when you cannot withdraw it.
Being poor in singapore - You die, your business.
Help the poor - helping the talent in the house to have more bonus as they are severely underpaid. So, they are the "poor".
In true fairness, there are funds to help the very very poor in singapore.

don't have so much taxable income to even think about tax evasion...but, do a lot of planning so as to avoid paying tax...every cent counts.

you are taxed everytime you buy something and you don't even realise it.
Most govts only source of income is taxes and fees. except for those who have good natural resources like ME and Brunei. Spore though do not have natural resources daringly invest surpluses instead of simply parking at sovereign wealth bonds of many countries including EU, US, Japan etc for small returns. You know that many govt and banks are in trouble when these countries default. Warren Buffet has recently proved to investment community that gold and bonds are inferior to equities over long term which is exactly Temasek and GIC's investment view. So Spore is the only country in the world that has zero natural resources but could still have some investment income to top up the tax collection. Spore can have low income tax to attract the rich because it has investment income and gst where no one can avoid tax. By having a broad base, the rich cannot avoid the 7% tax as long as they have to consume goods and services. The govt would offer gst tax rebate base on resonable model of spending to those lower income citizens even though most do not have to pay income tax at all. Foreigners also have to pay GST but they cannot get gst rebates.
