Expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong from Party Membership

The Workers’ Party has expelled Yaw Shin Leong from the party with immediate effect.
WP believes strongly in transparency and accountability, and expects no less from our party members, especially our Members of Parliament.
Shin Leong has been accused of several indiscretions in his private life. By continuing not to account to the Party and the people, especially the residents of Hougang, he has broken the faith, trust and expectations of the Party and People.
This is a difficult and painful decision for us. Shin Leong has been a core member of the Party leadership for more than 10 years, and has made significant and unique contributions towards WP’s growth. He has also served the residents of Hougang diligently. However, the Council has decided that it is in the public interest to take this step.
We also believe it is only fair to the Hougang residents that they have another opportunity to elect their Member of Parliament.
We apologise for having to put them through a by-election.
We wish to assure Hougang residents that they will continue to be served by the Party until the by-election is called.
The Meet the People sessions in Hougang will continue, with the other MPs covering. Residents are free to contact any WP MP for assistance. In addition, town council services will continue to be provided under the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council.
Finally, we wish to thank the public for their concern towards the Party and for walking with us through this difficult period.

What took them so long to come out with this decision?
Leadership handover period? Seriously, I really this LTK made the right choice this time, I've regained faith on WP. -
So, there will be by election?
I bet PAP will lose.

I am shocked by the decision by WP to perform this action.
This is never done in the history of Singapore.
They can go by the approach by the "honest mistake" approach and ask him to apologise to his resident in a press conference.
It take a lot of courage for the WP leadership to do this.

I am also curious about the decision. But Low Thia Khiang must be quite confident of winning the by elections.
There could be some form of pressure behind the scenes on the WP to make this drastic move.
At first WP kept mum, no reaction, then suddenly made a big move.

You are right that WP should have prepared for a candidate to stand for the by election to contest for Hougang.
They are also risking the possibility of losing Hougang during the by election.
So, in Singapore context of not taking risk, they are really determined to show the Singaporean their stand on being transparent and impartial to ANY one in their party.

WP showed that they will throw someone out if the person is screwed up..
and they showed that they have learnt from the lessons which the Gomez affair taught them..
with these actions, they showed that they are more action that the other party with that word in their party name... and that this is not a "honest mistake" and then try to get people to move on...
actions have their consequences... WP is showing it

It is a double edged sword that WP have swinged.
They have set the precedence of expelling a existing MP from the party.
This will forced the other party to react in a by election which they did not prepare.
This will also set a high standard for the present bunch of MP to stand higher on the moral ground.
Man in Whiteunderwear: Cannot use "Honest Mistake" and "Let's move on" any more, how ???
If I am them, I will be more worried if any issues were to be exposed now.

they have just shown what accountability means...
and with that, they just made sure everyone in their party maintains discipline and maintain and improve on high standards...
we don't want any more sub-standard MPs representing us... especially when there are so many in parliament already

there are too many substandard MPs in there already...
and risk losing Hougang?
or risk losing EVERYTHING they have worked for by keeping it when the position is untenable?
then they are no better than the MIW...
now they have claimed the moral high ground.. and showed the MIW what accountability is.. and that no one, MP or whatever, is above the principles they set and above the standards for the people..
they could have just issued a gag order and then sued the shit out of whoever let the news out.. just like that MIW are doing now with scroobal...
with that, they also showed integrity and that they will not let someone in their party sully their reputation with their actions.. and they are willing and able to do the drastic thing, even if it means losing a constituency or a place to keep everything above board..
unlike what is taught and held sacred by the MIW, they are showing by example that it is not what you have but how you got it which allows you to hold your head up high

If there is by election, I hope the opposition parties will use the opportunity to fiercely attack the PAP.
Especially that shit on foreigners. That old bastard Lee Kuan Yew tells us to tolerate more foreigners but his son during elections said that he will cut down. So what the hell is that?
The PAP will lose the by elections, they won't win the by elections.

WP is making a stand here.... they're saying 'This fella is scum, we're distancing ourselves from him even if it means risking a loss in the by-election'.
Sure, the loss of Hougang is a very real risk, but then again, to lose all their hard-won credibility over the moral failings of one man is probably even worse for them.
