The People’s Action Party (PAP) will work differently as Singaporeenters a new phase, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday, when he bared the party’s plans to transform itself following a watershed general election.
Pledging a “new PAP for a new era” in his speech during the ruling party’s convention, the PAP secretary-general pointed out that members must fight to win in every constituency and future elections would be tougher contests.
In the general election in May, the PAP got 60 per cent of the total votes, its lowest share ever, and lost a group representation constituency to an opposition party for the first time.
Lee said that in its effort to reinvent itself, the PAP would be less centralised and more interactive.
He acknowledged that Singapore is evolving, as a new generation with diverse perspectives and a new political environment that is more vocal and demanding come into play.
Good policies, he said, will be essential, but they need to go together with good politics.
“We must also recognise that policies alone are no longer sufficient, because we must fight the politics, carry the ground, convey a message that resonates with our people and inspire Singapore to aim high and strive for further growth,” he said.
As the PAP cannot expect any more clean sweeps or “safe wards”, it must prepare early, he noted.
He said he agreed completely with the conclusion from the party’s review of the General Election that potential candidates must be tapped earlier.
“We want a more diverse slate. We want our people identified earlier, tested out earlier, put in place on the ground earlier,” he said, adding that the party has already started looking for candidates for the next round.
He also said that members must be convinced that the PAP serves Singapore and Singaporeans first and foremost, and that the party’s cause is right.
“There will be a few who will be against us, whatever we say and some of these may have basically different views from the PAP. But others will want to displace us, and really for them the issue is not policies, not whether we are doing right or wrong but who is in charge… and they would like the PAP out and eventually themselves in,” he said.
Noting that there are some “hard-core opposition views on the Internet”, he said members should take such criticism in stride and constructively.
“If it's valid, hear it, take it to heart, use the feedback to improve ourselves,” he said. “If it's not valid, defend our position, explain why it is mistaken, respond firmly.”
Regarding Aljunied GRC, which was won by the opposition Workers’ Party, Lee said the party would not abandon its activists there.
“We will continue to keep in touch with the residents. For the next five years in Aljunied the PAP is in opposition but the PAP does not intend to give the Workers’ Party team in Aljunied a free run,” he said. “The party will back them (activists) up with leadership and support and we will fight on and eventually we will win back Aljunied.”
the only way PAP can maintain its hold in singapore politics, is economy. if you manage the economy well, despite the tight fistedness, people will still vote for you. otherwise like Japan, after 2 decades of no growth, LDP were voted out of office after 50 years. people were fedup of LDP of its inept politicians after 2 years of no economic growth. so economic growth is the primary factor if it wants to hold on to power.
I bet $10 that nothing is gonna change
"We must also recognise that policies alone are no longer sufficient, because we must fight the politics, carry the ground, convey a message that resonates with our people and inspire Singapore to aim high and strive for further growth,” he said.
As you can see, the polices are right, its about communication!
singaporeans are kind and brilliants people, and historically, they never supports party but supports one another to develop common goal of gracious love for a harmonious society :D. Any party desire for everlasting prosperity and sustainability must enforce its party's manifesto to serve the people and its goal of a gracious society. They can learn the skill and know-how from one of many other great personality such as ....:D

in a way its true.
bread and butter is the most important thing.

Those are words from his script for acting, drama drama! If he so sincerely mean it, have tight control over issuing work permit for foreigners to protect the rice bowls of Singaporeans. Whatever he says don't convince me. He has lost his credibility. I recognise the fact that he is in for the MONEY and selfish agenda. All he is interested is dollars and cents.

There always was communication.
As Inderjit Singh said, discuss when the policy is half baked, so that the collective wisdom of the country could added in.
Not when fully baked, then bring out just for comments, and adding the icing.
Same shit, different day. If they're really serious, the pay revision wouldn't have taken this long.
Talking about pay, where is Gerard Ee who is in charge of their salary review. Any outcome, Gerard? Is Gerard too chicken to do anything to suggest a big cut?
I bet it's just a minor tweak. These people think they're all well deserving talents.
I suppose as usual they are just putting up a show to "pacify" the public on their pay.
Nothing but wayang wayang.
It is strange that his speech hold no vision or goal for Singapore in the next few years.
He is still hurt by the defeat and want to win back the elections in 2016.
If his merry making men do not do any job for the next few years, he can forget about winning anything.
They are paid in the first place to serve the people, if this basic thing have to reminded by their leader, what are they doing for the past few years ?
Whether they serve or not serve people they know they will win, so what for work hard to serve people. They know the ins and outs of Singaporeans, they know no matter how bad they fare in public service the goons will continue to give them the mandate.
It is a matter of face to take back Aljunied GRC.

Aljunied was not about economy, but about frustrations of the nation.
a new pap??they goin to put ice in charge?????we are all going to die~~~~~~:)

You damn cheapskate.
it still sounds like a top down approach with more messages sent out to the ground to accept the policies....thats where the problem arises
to radically change it is not to formulate any policies without consulting general public opinions and special task force with independent and the relevant public representative of the people.....then make the discussion and results transparent....and with the results/ recommendations...put up to the fat THINK-TANK up there...
We have control freaks as government, there is nothing we can do to change their talk down way. The only thing we can try is vote them out. They are absolutely outdated and they are ever very insatiable for greed for money.
Ground-up Policies than Sky-down Communication...

I foresee this. the PAP may lose 1 or 2 or even 3 GRC's, but they will never lose the power to govern. economy is crucial.if singapore suffer no growth or negative growth for a decade, there may be a sign for a change of government.
First of all, cut all the ministers' pay.
Then reduce our taxes and CPF contribution.
Act like change, also nv change
