With the rise of the middle class in Asia, governments have to adjust to population pressures, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
As Singapore's population becomes more educated and assertive, there will be more challenges, he said at an hour-long dialogue session at the CEO Summit on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), reported Channel NewsAsia.
"We are a tiny little island; we need facilities, we need bus stops, we need to put childcare centres, we need to put community hospitals in different parts of the island," he was quoted as saying.
But when these facilities are to be installed, residents will make requests for the facilities to be built elsewhere because it could affect their property value or add noise to the area, he noted, adding that he does understand such sentiments.
The Prime Minister also noted that such problems are not unique to Singapore, with China facing similar issues with where to build petrochemical plans and government projects.
"The nature of the government will have to adjust in order to be acceptable and responsive to these pressures in the population," he was quoted as saying, as he pointed out that government will have to "find their own way forward".
At the same dialogue, the PM also said that Singapore is very much tied to the rest of Asia. He said if China's developments and relations with the rest of the world remain on track, Asia will do well in the next 10 years and beyond.
To leverage on what's happening worldwide, Singapore must continue to build-up knowledge-intensive industries and attract talents, he added.
We are a tiny island indeed.
So why do we need 6 or 8 or 10 million residents?
More people more money to "his" and members' pockets, huat!
Every year huat whether times good or bad.
they enjoying obscene salary and want people to adjust
In other countries a PM like "him" would have been thrown away. The singaporean voters willingly, with stupity conned by his shedding of crocodile tears gave him the mandate.
in the move to adjust for the middle or leisure classes...lets not ignore efforts to offer greater help to children of poor and broken families...there areyouth offenders....as young as 13 years old, involving with drug abuse and substances...most were treated badly at home by iresponsible parents...these youths going in and out of remand centres and tagged are, in my view, require greater focus and help from the govt...

So much angst.
Give them a chance lah.
Bukit Brown, Rochore Centre.
This are all decisions made, signed, sealed and delivered.
And then they welcome feedbacks, and hear your views. After you let go your steam, you feel reliefed, and they go ahead as planned.
Still a long way to go on the responsive part.

They already said many times.
They need to improve on the communication of their unpopular policies to the people.
Not about reviewing policies which Singaporeans are very upset about.

They can't be listening to everyone each n every time...
Sometimes it just takes of how to deal with the matter amicably, something which I guess with today's people thinking and mindset onto looking at problems, it's gonna be difficult.

Maybe when China is the Suiperpower.
With China's backing, Singapore can declare that elections are a waste of resources and time consuming, and the campaigning period a public nuisance.
Government has lot of pressure....how to let go its pressure is a challenge that they have to face. Hopefully the government can identify a moderation of its economy, people and society well beings for a long term competitiveness of prosperous peace and bliss. The America & European countries also did very well in the past and were expecting everlasting luxury as well. Hope that Singapore always stay prosperous, loving and harmoniously :D
Singaporean must be the most hopeful population in the world.
After they vote, they hope that their voice will be listened, their feedback will be actioned and their complaint will be addressed.
Even though for the last 8 years, they were classified as fussy and complacent and worse than foreign talents.
Till today, they are still hoping.
Stay hopeful, Stay Stupid.
