' The 106 acre (0.4 km²) estate was once part of the extensive nutmeg plantation of Mount Sophia. In 1867, the British colonial government acquired the land and built a mansion to be the official home of the British Governor To build a residence of palatial proportions and cost was deemed too extravagant. Ord stood his ground, however, and eventually acquired 106 acres (0.43 km2) of land from C.R. Prinsep's nutmeg estate in 1867. '===Wiki
(106 acre = 428 966.781 sq meters)
The presidential palace is very, very spacious.
Meanwhile at the other end of the economic gap....
In today papers, saw 2 Singaporean families and their kids, squeeze into a tiny rental flat.
Life little irony in little SG....
Land is scarce. Move Istana away from city. Demolish istana to give way for short of land.
Think huge tract of land is hidden from the public view. PAP not likely to demolish that colonial structure.
centralised location ma, can go anywhere also convenient.
near parliament house too

don't need to talk about istana, further down the road in Cairnhill, many families live in apartment that are worth millions, on the other side of Istana, towards CBD, apartments there are worthed $4000 psf.
Wonder why? it is not an irony in SG, it is a fact of life. It is either you made the right investment at the right time, you had a highly paid job and you work hard, or wish you were born with golden spoon.
Look at it the other way, you can stay in your rented home as long as you pay rent, otherwise buy the place. Istana is where the president work and stay at the same time, where he has to entertain foreign visitors, like around 9000 during deepavali, whether he likes it or not, and he stays there only as long as he is the president.
You have your choice, the president will have to depend on the votes of the people.
