Anyway, Nanyang Uni was a Chinese uni, only natural it had Chinese banners.
What's important is you know the history of Nanyang Uni (Nan Tah) under LKY.
Against the wishes of many Chinese, he forced it to merge with University of Singapore to form NUS, and this led to the taboo-ization of the "Nan Tah" name.
A new school was set up in Nan Tah's campus called NTI and later re-named NTU.
Now NTU is claiming the "Nan Tah" name as if nothing ever happened, it doesn't even belong to them.

Yes, it is the language of the father's race no matter what. It is not the race on your IC (which historically was the father's race but now can reflect both races).
This policy is so embarrassing that when MOE describes the MT policy on its website, they don't mention the father's race part.
Those who may & must choose any "2nd language" are Eurasians, those whose MT is not available here (eg Swedes) and those whose MT is English (eg Brits, Americans), or anyone with a Eurasian, Swede or Brit father. This satisfies the MT requirement.
If you have returned from overseas and have not studied your MT before, you are exempt from MT requirement altogether.
Back in 1999 I remember a Vietnamese guy from my JC who studied French. That same year, I also met a Korean dude at the Pre-U Seminar who was also leaning that language, and he was friends with the Viet guy from my school.
What I know about the MT policy is that it gives non-Chinese the option of learning our language in lieu of theirs, but it dictates that we have to study Chinese, and any other languages are purely elective.

ok people, looks like u all blowing alot of hot air around. Fact: Temasek was an island, part of Malaysia, homogenous population of Malay... dominant language= Malay. Fact: Singapore became British Colony- thus English became our official language. Lingua franca was still Malay...Chinese coolies, Indian sepoys/dhobies all communicated with pasar Malay. Singapore was no longer homogenous but multi-racial. Fact: Peranakan people are a beautiful example of what love can produce when we see beyond colour, race or language... a blend of two cultures which did not need colonising or conquering... just human beings in love. Why condemn them so... just because they did not speak pure Chinese? They were not made in China.... they are original productions. Those poor early forefathers tried their best to maintain their Chineseness... but the children were brought up by the lovely Malay mothers, thus resulted in the beautiful fusion.
Fact: LKY used English to unify the 4 races... Singapore was not a Chinese province - only had a Chinese majority in a MALAY land. Chinese came here to seek fortune....Malays were native. To unify all, and create equality... all learn English, all at level playing field. Malaysia refused... insisted on Malay superiority....thus the break in 1965.
Be proud.. u are Singapore Chinese. No need to be elite like China scholar. whatever lingo u speak, u will always look Chinese, can't run away. Don't blame the old guy....He did a wonderful job. He had fire and passion and vision. Now, he's slowly fading away because his heart broke when he lost his dear wife. Mr Lee, whatever people said, I know u were blessed because you shared true love with one true soulmate. God Bless her soul, what a good wife.

Chinese in Singapore don't study in chinese schools, so naturally their standard of mandarin will be poorer than those who are trained in chinese schools.
Another factor is the anglicisation of Singapore society. Language must be used in order to be retained. If you don't use the language, your proficiency will decline over time due to non use.
The anglicisation of Singapore; english being dominant has led to a decline of usage of other languages, leading to decline of those languages.

Bilingualism with Mandarin for Chinese of Singapore is shit lah. Our mother tongue of Chinese Singaporeans is not Mandarin but are the dialects from Southern China where our ancestors came lah !
Do not study Mandarin in school, but study your Mother Tongue such as Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew and etc.

In the past, Chinese schools were used as a political tool for separatist movements therefore there was segregation.
In this new era, Chinese schools is to be structured differently and of course it does not have to be like the past, where it is used synchronically as a political tool for segregation.
Look at Malaysia, where Chinese schools still exist, without any political infiltration. Their standard of Chinese is very high. This is the way which we can model upon.
Therefore, there is no direct correlation of whether separation = language medium of a school.
It's the political ideology that were carried in those days.
