Government spending is expected to rise over the next five years as it embarks on plans to improve the quality of life for Singaporeans.
These plans include improving the transport infrastructure, enhancing the educational and healthcare systems and improving the quality of housing, listed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Tuesday.
This will result in "government expenditure rising as a percentage of GDP in the next five years," he was quoted by The Straits Timesas saying.
However, Tharman stressed that the government will maintain a "sound and sustainable fiscal system" and has in place a "resilient revenue structure to enable us to meet these higher spending needs".
He also added that the "overall burden of taxes on Singaporeans" will remain low by international standards.
In response to President Tony Tan's address on Monday, Tharman said strong reserves ensure Singapore can deal with crises.
He added that the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation and Temasek Holdings must continue to focus on the long term, pursuing investment strategies that "generate sustainable portfolio returns".
Meanwhile the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has also pledged to create more good jobs for locals, reported the paper.
In his addendum to the president's address, MTI minister Lim Hng Kiang was quoted as saying, "Singapore will be the preferred location for companies to deepen their understanding of the Asian consumer and test-bed new products and services for the region.
"At the same time, we will make Singapore an attractive base for emerging Asian companies seeking to expand internationally," he said.
The ministry also said it would help Singapore move up the value chain for production and tap on new growth opportunities.
To ensure local firms are competitive and productive, eight customised productivity roadmaps in various sectors, such as retail and precision engineering, have been deployed. One initiative is the Furniture Industry Productivity Plan launched by SPRING Singapore on Tuesday
Wait and see!

Also, I have been notice that for students, be it pr or sec or jc, parents need to sign the edusave form for courses, why not give the student foc? And the edusave money can be use for purchasing books and text books?

There is no free lunch , this was told by that dictator.
Exactly how does the Govt spend on transport when they refuse to nationalise or subsidise it?
Not really a free lunch, but to give more rebates and foc for the students studying in spore, especially for sporean students, not foreign students. This is also part of the expenses parents will need to set aside too if edusave is not enough.

It will be possible when PAP is no longer the government. Vote them out in 2016.
They always do things basing on their own personal agenda to benefit themselves. Provide benefits to the citizens not their priority.
I have the feeling that more bills going to increase very very soon....one at a time....
but wait....lky is no more pulling strings n he is like 89 years old already n too old to walk to office. so who is the one exactly doing the crappy decisions n decision making?normally it should be some leader and his wife at dinner time.

He does not need to be present to tell what he wants. Just open mouth give instruction or drop email.
Waiting for the holiday he is giving us.
I just want to see the bills reduce. For the rest, I dont want any. Just reduce all the bills!

He is still the overall master behind PAP.
Reduce in billing amount, very unlikely. Reason being they are in to earn more money from us. Always remember they run this country like a commercial organisation, their aim is to earn lots of money for themselves.
Dont be fooled by more PAP propaganda.
Are they truly improving the lives of Singaporeans or are they simply gearing the country up to accomodate more foreigners so as to hit their 6 million target ?
So lame and a big irony for them to be saying improving on Singaporeans' lives when they are the reason why Singaporeans' lives are messed up in the 1st place.
Like 神也是他们, 鬼也是他们 。
I don't get it.
Isn't it the job of every government to improve the lives of its citizens?
Improving transportation, healthcare and education is big news ?
More people = More lives = More quality
The quality of your life depends on you.
The government is to increase spending. Reason: to improve quality of life.
That means adding more infrastructure, and amenities. It is up to you to make use of it, to improve your quality of life.
You must take responsibility for your well being.
How much well being you want?
Go get it. It is up to you.
It will be put in place.

the art of success in life is to know when to be 神...and when to be 鬼...
Well, everything comes at a price....and in our context, a hefty price. So I don't expect anything out of this world when they promise things like that.

神 is only when election is looming, where they start to dispense out goodies.
鬼 is after they won the elections, and have the next 5 years to suck up more money
