The President is still subordinate to the PM and his Cabinet.

Remember what they did to Devan Nair.
On March 28, 1985, Nair resigned in unclear circumstances. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew stated in Parliament that Nair resigned to get treatment for alcoholism, a charge Nair hotly denied. According to Nair's counterclaim, he resigned under pressure when their political views came into conflict and Lee threatened to seek a motion in parliament to oust him as president. Nair also alleged that he was fed drugs to make him appear disoriented, and rumours were spread about his personal life in an attempt to discredit him. In 1999, an article about the case in the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail resulted in a libel suit by Lee.[1] The suit was thrown out of court after Nair's counterclaim.[2]

Wah, ST printed this forum letter.
Ironic that PAP endeavours to adopt a western style economic system but not the civil liberties that is associated with it.
Do we have the chance to vote?
Maybe it's just another no-vote President.

Mr Ong Teng Cheong is the one and only elected President.
The rest were not elected by the people of Singapore.

:( Singapore needs someone who WILL and HAS been speaking up for the people... someone like Dr Tan Cheng Bock!
I think this was not highlighted before but this is one power speech by him titled "No blank cheque for PAP" in 1985! Thats some 26 years ago mates...
One extract from the speech which I found very personal
"I would like to relate an incident involving my son. I took him to the Botanic Gardens one day, when he was very young. I was eager to see the Orchids section, and so I walked very very fast. He shouted to me to wait for him. I turned around, only to urge him on. I had presumed he was able to follow me but suddenly he stopped calling. I turned back and found him seated on a stone at the far end of the road. I walked to him. I saw that he was angry and in tears and, with arms folded,he burst out,"Why didn’t you wait for me?"He refused to move in spite of my apologies. He was hurt. He interpreted my fast pace as not caring, and this is how the people view the PAP."

After the election, people will know who they choose.
Aug 11, 2011 - Straits Times
THE Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) on Thursday announced that it has issued four certificates of eligibility for the coming presidential election on Aug 27.
The four who qualify to stand as candidates are: former deputy prime minister Tony Tan, former Ayer Rajah MP Tan Cheng Bock, former NTUC Income chief executive Tan Kin Lian and former senior civil servant Tan Jee Say.
The other two applicants - former JTC chief financial officer Andrew Kuan and former private tutor Ooi Boon Ewe - were unsuccessful in their applications.
The PEC said Mr Kuan's seniority and responsibility at JTC corporation were not comparable to the experience and qualifications required under the Constitution. In the case of Mr Ooi, who had asked the committee the waive the constitutional requirements, the committee said it had no powers to waive the requirements.
Of the four successful applicants, Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock qualified under the original set of constitutional requirements, while Mr Tan Kin Lian and Mr Tan Jee Say were ruled to have the experience and ability comparable to the original requirements.
The four candidates may now turn up on Nomination Day on Aug 17, if they so choose, and contest in the election.
