NTUC to focus on better employment for Singaporeans |
SINGAPORE: Singapore's Labour Chief Lim Swee Say said on Wednesday that the Labour Movement is reshaping itself to be more pro-worker and will strive for better employment for citizens.
Mr Lim said this year's general election have shown that full employment isn't enough to satisfy the aspirations of Singaporeans.
He added that Singaporeans want better paying jobs and career advancement where low-wage workers want higher wages, mature workers want decent jobs, back to work women want to get their careers back on track and PMETs want faster career advancement.
He said Singapore must find the right balance between being pro-business and pro-worker.
With the current situation of full employment, Mr Lim said the balancing point should be adjusted towards helping Singaporeans find better employment.
He said an idea thrown up during initial discussions is to link access to foreign labour to productivity gains and the hiring of mature workers.
Another idea is to have a dependency ceiling for PMETs (professionals, managers, executives, technicians).
Mr Lim said some companies have foreigners as a vast majority, limiting career advancement for Singaporean PMETs.
However, he stressed that these ideas are not cast in stone, and the labour movement wants to engage the public in debate to reflect their concerns.
This represents a new focus for NTUC - greater transparency over policy formulation.
Mr Lim said that many Singaporeans may be familiar with the various policies, but do not know the rationale behind them.
In reshaping the labour movement, Mr Lim also announced new office holders.
Mr Ong Ye Kung has been promoted to Deputy Secretary General, replacing Madam Halimah Yacob.
Ms Cham Hui Fong takes over from Mrs Josephine Teo as Assistant Secretary General.

"Labour Movement is reshaping itself to be more pro-worker and will strive for better employment for citizens." - Labour movement is supposed to be pro-worker and is supposed to strive for better employment for citizens. You mean it is supposed to be otherwise?
"He added that Singaporeans want better paying jobs and career advancement where low-wage workers want higher wages, mature workers want decent jobs, back to work women want to get their careers back on track and PMETs want faster career advancement." - You mean, Singaporeans want lower paying jobs, no career advancement etc?
Come on.

Hey dude, no need to get so agitated and bias here.
Give NTUC and Lim Swee Say a chance to help the older and lower-pay and unskilled workers. NTUC, Lim and the workers all deserve a chance to get it right.
What about u? Nothing nothing for fellow citizens but always complaining, always ridiculing the govt here. Shame on u!
If u really want to help and is sincerere about it, join the RC volunteers and see for yourself what the PAP and NTUC is doing for Singapore

If Lim Swee Say is so bad as u described, then how do u explain the East Coast GRC residents gave him and his team the mandate?
Are u saying that the residents are stupid?
Pls apologise to them here for your insulting remarks
What is helpful for Singapore is a common graciousness in all of us. When something seem not correct from the perspective of incorrectness, ones should reflect on this common gracious society that Singapore has built over time. And people in Singapore ought to reflect upon this common graciousness -an extraordinary model specially found in a multi-cultural and religious society. While people in Singapore forging ahead for a happy living, the real future of Singapore is on its education policy of gracious society of humanity as this is the truth of a true globalisation of unique peace and harmony in mankind Let us be hopeful for a much more better bliss & harmony in Singapore.
Lim swee swee likes to talk alot, very lor sor one, but whatever he said, nothing works, even if it works, it dun benefit the general, only a few peoples, then he will show that particular people to all as tho, all of us gain from what he had done, but, what had he done so far?? Beside getting more of his members, talkatives and funny dressing, I see this minister without portfolio really did nothing without a portfolio.
As a labour chief, he should be hard on employers who did not raise wages and yet exploit workers further, but end up seem like he drink, dine and play golf with them leh, saw him once at Marina rising funds, have to beg from employers somemore. what the hell.

Licker, I do not need to obey you. I have no respect for you. If you hate the people here and our comments just get out to find happiness in PAP your master's website.
People who voted for PAP are too kiasu kiasee, negatively soft hearted, easily manipulated, gullible, arrogant, refuse to accept reality and truth and the list goes on.

Sorry to tell you that this will not be achieved under the rule of PAP. One good example is the recent case on how Sitoh the PAP MP in Potong Pasir treats the Town Council staff.

the problem is that you cannot differentiate between the political party and the country...
the country is much more important and infinitely bigger than any mere shitty political party...
if you do not and cannot differentiate between the two, you are more stupid than i give you discredit for...
go figure out the difference.. if you cannot, suicide may be the only solution for you as should be the fate of all who are disloyal and want harm to their own countries

Since 1965, PAP has been given the mandate to tule Singapore.
On 2011 Singapore continues to give the PAP the mandate.
So is it wrong to say Singapore is PAP and PAP is Singapore intertwined?
Pls do not ask people to die, u are not God but DOG!

I am referrring to you and you alone, if you are gentlemen enough you will not drag other innocent ones and said in your reply to me "Neither do we have...." Hypocrite and coward like the PAP you support. We are alert enough to know your motive here. Nothing you say will stop us from stating facts and reality about your idol and masters PAP.
We are not here to hear your rantings and bootlicking of your masters PAP. Shoo off!
