PM Lee says Singapore must study nuclear option

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong again stressed that Singapore has not made a decision on nuclear power but it is an option that must be studied.
He said this at a news conference on Wednesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in Singapore for a two-day visit.
Germany had on Monday announced it would shut down its nuclear reactors by 2022.
It is Dr Merkel's first visit to Singapore as German Chancellor.
Mr Lee also noted that she is his first foreign visitor after he was re-elected to Parliament, just as he was her first foreign guest when Dr Merkel became Chancellor in 2005.
Both leaders made clear that Singapore-German relationship is an important one for the two countries.
Singapore is Germany's main trading partner in Southeast Asia, while German companies have long made their presence felt here, particularly in manufacturing.
Latest figures show that bilateral trade amounted to some S$20.5 billion in 2010.
Germany is also Singapore's biggest trading partner among the EU countries.
Both leaders agreed over the hour-long discussion to increase cooperation in R&D and support for enterprises.
They also agreed on the importance of ASEAN and the EU ties.
Dr Merkel said: "Cooperation between the EU and ASEAN needs to be further enhanced, needs to be further developed to the benefit of both, because these are after all two economic regions that wield quite considerable economic clout, and therefore lend themselves ideally to co-operate even more in the future."
What was not on the table was nuclear energy. He said Singapore is still exploring the option.
Prime Minister Lee said: "We need to understand it, because I think this is something which will not go away. And even if we don't do nuclear energy, our neighbours will do nuclear energy, and we need to understand the implications for us."
Asked about his choice for the post of IMF chief, Mr Lee said this would be decided on merit.
He said: "I would not say that I'm looking for an Asian candidate. I think we want to look for the best person who can do a very difficult job, which is crucial towards the stability of the global monetary system."
Asked by German media about the significance of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's retirement from the Cabinet, Prime Minister Lee said that even when Mr Lee Kuan Yew was still in the Cabinet, decisions were already being made by PM Lee and the younger ministers. The senior Mr Lee would interject and express his views at times.
"What has happened is that now that he has retired, this has become more visible, and that's all," he said.
Dr Merkel also met President SR Nathan at the Istana, as well as Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
The German Chancellor was also hosted to a state dinner by Prime Minister Lee. Her visit ends on Thursday.

==========
Is he wanting to build nuclear plant to claim this as his great achievement? Germany has decided to shut down their nuclear plant.
Goes Boom in the future. It's his fault.
Population increases likewise to demand of energy supply unless population increases the demand of energy saving is done on all corporations, government agencies and the housing estates etc and mass production of solar power among others option. Most importantly is the coolant of human energy
Maybe, build in the ocean where the seawater can provide adequate cooling and safety measure for waste discharge.
thus heard from the Taiwan news, the recent one in Japan is due to human error first before the earthquake. the cooling of the reactor were suppose to be automated, but one of the engineer turn on to manual cooling and forgot to switch it back to auto for 5 hours and hence melt down the reactor! the reactors are worstening. most are not reported here that it's a human error, they blame it on the quake.
dangerous!!!
Nuclear is dangerous. Germany shutting down nuclear plants.
I think there is a GNS (Great Nuclear Sale) going on.
That is why Ah Loong want to set up the nuclear plant.
Three quote and the cheapest one.
A massive outcry has erupted in cyberspace over Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s assertion that Singapore’s decision to explore the use of nuclear power on the small island state with most netizens voicing concerns over the move.
PM Lee made the stunning revelation during a news conference yesterday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in Singapore for a two-day visit.
“We need to understand it, because I think this is something which will not go away. And even if we don’t do nuclear energy, our neighbours will do nuclear energy, and we need to understand the implications for us,” PM Lee quipped.
The stunning news sparked a vigorous debate on TR
Henry Chai doubted the PAP regime’s ability to ensure the safe use of nuclear energy:
“come on lah, they couldn’t even keep an eye on mas selamat or manage the flood in orchard road, seriously u trust them to handle all the operations within the nuclear plant? One boomz and our country will be destroyed, where can we evacuate, P ubin and tekong? There is no second chance if there is a mishap this time round.”
Mark Lim concurred:
“There are people in nuke power and struggling to get out. And now we want to get into it? Probably that will need one big bunch of FTs to come study and another bunch of FTs to build then 1 more bunch of FTs to run the nuke power plant. Eventually, all it takes is just 1 honest mistake to get all Singaporeans to vaporize.”
Michael Chin thought it is another money-making venture:
“He’s just trying so hard to attract ‘foreign talent’ again so that it would benefit the bottom line of GIC and Temasek, isnt he? I am sure he is not going to waver and it’s just a show he’s putting up, despite the setbacks of Japan. After all, he’s going to make money either way.”
Besides safety issues, Singapore also has to consider how their neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia will react. Being a small island only 700 square kilometers in size, there will be no place for Singaporeans to evacuate to in the event of a nuclear accident and meltdown like what happened to the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan.
u nuke us we will vote u out

use as weapon for SAF? or a theat for us if we don't vote for PAP?
everyone is waiting for one another to drop arms...and the results are dangerous as all will be stocking up resources towards building nuclear plants..
this is the fastest answer as to how the world will come to an end...

Nuclear power is dangerous if not handled properly. You see how much mistakes the Jap made on the safety of their nuclear plant, how they underestimated the threat of Tsunami, on the impact on nuclear power?
you should blame the arab for increasing oil prices, US$15 a barrel will solve all the energy problem in the world.
some people trying get out of nuclear,
sg trying to get into,
nuclear damm dangerous.....
later meltdown, i sure die

It does not matter the market price of oil. Whether increase or decrease in the oil/fuel price, the utilities bill keeps going up. For all fairness, our utility bills should go down when the oil price drops but it is not the case here.
u think they care?they already know the ordinary man on street couldnt be bothered that much.....elections already spoke for itself....if they wannna turn plcae into a fukushima or chernobyl.....so be it.
like as if anyone here would protest outside his office.

Oil prices don't matter? wake up!
Since the 1st and 2nd oil crisis, the world has been looking for alternative sources of energy. Now the US has 65 nuclear power plants, Uk has 19 and the Germany has 17, just to mention a few. Japan has 55 plants because they used to have to import fuel for 61% of their energy requirement. You think these people are nuts, spend millions of dollars to build power plants to create chernobyl or fukushima?
Nuclear energy is still a debated issue all over the world, but many have used this for political reason. the present chancellor of germany is said to be buying votes by announcing the closure of ALL their nuclear power plants, but she hasn't come up with any alternatives source of energy, or if she is going to spend more time to suck up to those in the middle east, or send in troops into central asia to sure more supplies of oils, can wind power or hydropower replace the nuclear energy?
to study doesn't meant we will have, but we don't rule out.
people and the like of you are running out of idea, pick up anything on the ground and try to hammer your opponent, be careful, pick up a stone that is too heavy for your size, it will just drop and hit your legs. take care.

Just an observation and fact of life in Singapore I stated and this makes you real mad to overreact, gosh! Resort to cursing, tsk tsk tsk, PAP supporter. hahahahhaha
Dumb, that post is one point on my mind. I need not tell you more than what I want to say.

where did I curse you in my post?
Study of nuclear power option is a statement, not an observation.
It is not built yet, so it is not a fact of life in Singapore.
PAP supporter? haha, anybody who do not fight against the PAP is seen as a PAP supporter, that is pathetic.
give some real argument why we should not even study nuclear power as a source of energy for this island country that lacks everything, one point in mind can be a result of a mightmare or a wet dream, don't need to say much.
