The Singapore Parliament has approved a 26 per cent increase in the President’s salary as well as higher salaries for his personal staff for the fiscal year of 2010.
The President’s salary, also known as the Privy Purse, is now set at S$4,267,500, up from $3,376,800.
The amount for staff salaries is increased to $4,532,400 or $473,600 higher than that of the year before.
The President’s entertainment allowance remains at $73,000.
The revision is part of an overall increase in the manpower expenditure for the Office of the Istana, which is staffed by 62 personnel.
On Thursday, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who proposed that the House support the change, said this caters for the “recruitment of an additional staff officer to support the work of the Council of Presidential Advisers and a butler manager to meet increased demand for butler services at the Istana, and to meet the higher variable payments on account of a strong economic growth”.
The President’s salary rises in tandem with that of political, judicial and civil service appointment holders.
However, the expenditure for Istana expenses was cut by $25,300 to $2,068,300 to “reflect savings” on these and other ad hoc spending, said Mr Tharman. The total sum allocated for the Civil List is $11.6 million.
For the next financial year, Mr Tharman said this overall sum will remain unchanged, but the allocation for the President’s salary and allowances will drop to $3,782,000 due to lower variable payments anticipated.
An extra $610,000 will be set aside for the Presidential Swearing-in Ceremony which is likely to be in late August.
Some one better ask him to return his million dollar salary if he cannot answer the simple question on how much reserves that we have and how much is being used for investment.
His job was never to attend star awards and to give out awards.
Same issue for the rest of Ms whether they have achieved their performance index.
i think it's no. 1 ranking global joke leh...4.2m...and his job is just to..............
that's why we should vote georgie out of aljunied so that georgie can be voted in aas the next president
Up till now, i still do not know why Singaporeans vote for a President? What is the use, time has changed, please change with time, President of Singapore is damn unproductive, not only his high salary, his house, expenses, travel, and even shopping are fully paid for by taxpayers.
My suggestion is that scrap all those donation shows, remove the president, takes all his allowances and paid to contribution into charity, should be more than enuf to cover at least half of the total donation per year.
Now I am 22yo, next five years, i will be 27yo, hmmmm....can stand for election liao,...Citizens of Singapore, please bear with me, in five years time, you will see a far greater girl than Nicole or Kate Tin on her way. Remember Angel Lin.

ya, not easy leh, sit at istana whole day wandering, lonely and waiting, no gal to see except his wife, who go shopping after shopping, he wants to go out also cannot, like a prisoner, then when people ask you to go here, you go here, go there, you go there, sign here, you sign here, wave, you wave, smile, your smile, like a robot, if you want to take over him, by all means
Actually its true, pay him $11,000.00 a day, he not interested in kopi or teh lui.
Frankly, having earn enough and enough of this boring life, he is thinking of getting out of this presidency as soon as possible, then can go New Delhi with perhap his new found, and live happily everafter
singapore president is only for symbolic purpose.
in which country can we find both premier and president? especially the president with no administrative power and we pay him 10x obama salary? only singaporeans are fool enough to allow that. i talk to an expat recently, he told me frankly, there is no way US president can pay himself that much even a pay rise of 10% for himself would be shoot down very fast.
our president is only just for entertainment purpose? it seem what he spent is for joy and fun. butler, entertainment allowances, .. OMG. more taxpayers money into the wrong use.

Recently, LHL told the young and impressionable undergrads that the US presidents wrote books to earn the millions.
As if book sale is 100% guaranteed, assured, money making machinery. There is such thing as poor sale, market bombed, adverse public reception.
At least they wrote books, not sit and collect the millions or milk the public for money or demand that the money is their entitlements.
Today ST, that newly elected Tan said that minister's pay is also not sacred cow anymore - up for review.
They finally waking up to the new reality that they can walk with Singaporeans to a new dawn or they can walk into the sunset themselves -alone without the company of Singaporeans.
I also want to be in politics, but no chance since I do not have good grades on my credentials...toooo bad !

He is elected to guard the reserves from mis-use.
So far, no one have hold him accountable on whether he have done his job.
So, what is the justification for the pay rise ?
Only President Ong have asked the questions on how much the reserves is.
He is like japanese emperor only a symbolic and figure head with no real power.
Why do we have to pay him so much money?
he deserved the heavenly salary........
