President Wee is a very compassionate n caring president who has been actively doing community work even after his term.
President Ong is one whom we known as People's President. He is one who question & ask till PAP fed up.
On 28 August 1993, close to 60% of voters chose Mr Ong as the country's first Elected President. In his pre-election speech, he said, " Some people still ask whether my long previous association with the PAP will stop me from acting independently. The answer is no. My loyalty is first and foremost, to the people of Singapore. It has always been so, and will always remain so". Mr Ong indeed fulfilled this electoral promise of being pro-Singapore as can be seen in these examples:
a) In 1994, Mr Ong, as President, had disagreed with the Government's interpretation of the Constitution, regarding the powers of the Presidential Office. Mr Ong referred the issue to a special High Court tribunal, which was chaired by the Chief Justice. When the final decision was ruled in favour of the government, Mr Ong graciously accepted it.
b) On 16 July 1999, at a press conference to indicate that he would not be contesting a second term, President Ong mentioned some problems he had faced during his term as President. His points drew a swift response from the government but it was evident that President had been accountable to Singaporeans while performing his duties as President. As the President, Mr Ong was also concerned with the less fortunate in society as well as the promotion of arts and culture. He initiated several events such as the President's Star Charity and the President's Charity Art Exhibition and Concert.
Among the five former presidents who have died, Ong is the first president who did not receive a state funeral. He received a state-assisted funeral instead.
Hope this helps.
So the reason why the govern is giving 4m to Nathan so that we will not have another Mr Ong

Duh, because the presidential term is 6 years, and the parliamentary term is 5 years in singapore, so they usually almost come hand in hand?

Already had Yusof Ishak and Devan Nair (who is now anti-LKY living in Canada). LKY sued him in Canada but didn't succeed.

I support Tan Kin Lian running. I like him because he is honest and humble.
He must put up an election deposit that may be around $20,000. If he doesn't get at least 12.5% of the votes, he will lose it.
Sure to get back, but now he is a simple man living quietly and thriftily on his savings. I'm sure he won't risk it.

He should have no problem meeting the requirements of 12.5 % of the votes.
20m salary over the presidential tenure....that could soften any president's resolve. Well who knows, he may turn out to be Singapore's best ever president? heh.

He no money lah. Really no money. He lives in upper YCK, drives a japanese car when not taking mrt.
All the better for President that he did not benefit from NTUC.
when he was ntuc ceo, the pay was in the milllions wor....what talking you. And he CEO of NTUC for 30 freaking years.

Bro, he was not chairman of NTUC (Lee Boon Yang).
He was CEO of NTUC Income (a business unit) only selling life, accident, travel, motor insurance. Local company with no overseas business, paying on the low end of the CEO scale. Pay about $20-30K, and for so many years NTUC Income was small. You think SME pay is great?
Part of the reason he's so unhappy, taking on the rich etc. If he was rich, he would be living large and enjoying life.

When he gets $4m per year, he won't be simple anymore.
When he is driven in government limo, flies SQ first class, he can't be simple.
When his family travel with him on his business tour on government account, he is not simple.

Alize,
$17,000,000,000 asset company is a SME huh.
A CEO of a $17 billion asset company' s pay is only $20 - 30K per month huh
A good insurance agent will have already earning more than $20K - $30K per month.
You must be kidding or ill-informed.

He was CEO for 30 years, NTUC Income wasn't worth $17 billion since day 1.
The thing is insurance industry is a poor cousin to other finance lines. Agents earn on commission year on year, sure alot of them earn more than salaried execs in insurance.
Furthermore, profit margin for NTUC's business (selling house, travel, motor, accident insurance) is low compared to commercial insurance. How much does one customer spend, and how much does the agent take compared to the company?
Whether or not he will be President, I am saying his CEO's pay was a laughing stock among insurance ppl.

dude....are you sure? I hope you got your facts right leh......AIA CEO of Singapore branch alone already $1-2m a year and NTUC, one of their close competitors; the CEO's pay is $20-30k a month?
And this TKL also sits on other boards of governance, so it's not his only source of income.
