Will sporean got to vote for our own president?
What is the purpose of having a President in Singapore?
Originally posted by Ichikosong (NYK):My vote for him if he willing to be one.
But if he ends up being another wave hand president then bye bye to him next term and many will be cursing at him unlike President Wee & President Ong.
Likewise, same thing goes for Oppostion Parties in coming GE, I give my vote to let them prove themself if they cannot make it then next term I m more than willing to let PAP screw me again.
Main issue is, are we Singaporean willing to offer them an opportunity to prove themselves?
What makes you think Wee and Ong were so good? All Presidents are figureheads with the PM running the show.
Only propaganda tells you they were good. In time, people will think Nathan was fantastic.

Yep, USA have President, PRC also have President. So Singapore have President for what? Once a PRC minister asked me why we still want a colonian mentality and make visiting dignitaries busy in state visit to Singapore. For a small county, these ppl have to visit the President, the PM, the MM, the SM and ?????????

bro, good or bad president we all know. Ong dare to voice up and check the govt on various issues until the top echelon of PAP get agitiated. most singapoeans knows about it. If u dont know, ask around, but make sure ask those smart enough to tell you.
nathan , for god sake, If he and mah bo tan stand to fight election i will vote for him. other than Mah, i will vote for another guy instead of nathan. haha

Then .... after some time ........ back 2 square 1, will b like aneh president juz WAVE HAND DURING national day.
His job soooooooo simple.
He need not be a "yes" man as he is not nominated by the PAP.
He can question, investigate and more .
He can donate a major part of his salary to the charity or he can offer to be the
President for a nominal sum.

bro, i really bei tahan you. i think you either are foreigner or some ignorant young singaporeans that need to grow up.
Most of the world is either president system or prime minister system.
USA is president
UK, aust is prime minister
Thailand is prime minister system of coz no president lah.
Singapore is one of the few that has both puppet president and a prime minister.
wana know why? decorations nia, to tell the world we are most democratic in the world.

It is not just Propaganda. I have personal encounters with the late President Mr Wee
Kim Wee and he is a very humble man and I can feel his sincerity coming from his
heart.

I met Tan Kin Lian face to face before regarding some work related issue (no he's not my boss) and I should say, he's intelligent but also very scheming, not the type I would support as president.

U might not be Singaporean or u r too young to encounter President Wee n Ong.
President Wee is a very compassionate n caring president who has been actively doing community work even after his term.
President Ong is one whom we known as People's President. He is one who question & ask till PAP fed up.
On 28 August 1993, close to 60% of voters chose Mr Ong as the country's first Elected President. In his pre-election speech, he said, " Some people still ask whether my long previous association with the PAP will stop me from acting independently. The answer is no. My loyalty is first and foremost, to the people of Singapore. It has always been so, and will always remain so". Mr Ong indeed fulfilled this electoral promise of being pro-Singapore as can be seen in these examples:
a) In 1994, Mr Ong, as President, had disagreed with the Government's interpretation of the Constitution, regarding the powers of the Presidential Office. Mr Ong referred the issue to a special High Court tribunal, which was chaired by the Chief Justice. When the final decision was ruled in favour of the government, Mr Ong graciously accepted it.
b) On 16 July 1999, at a press conference to indicate that he would not be contesting a second term, President Ong mentioned some problems he had faced during his term as President. His points drew a swift response from the government but it was evident that President had been accountable to Singaporeans while performing his duties as President.
As the President, Mr Ong was also concerned with the less fortunate in society as well as the promotion of arts and culture. He initiated several events such as the President's Star Charity and the President's Charity Art Exhibition and Concert.
Among the five former presidents who have died, Ong is the first president who did not receive a state funeral. He received a state-assisted funeral instead.
Hope this helps.
Pls reduce his salary.

FYI, President Wee was boss of now Media COCK n President Ong was the Labour Head. If base on ur theory then they lagi cannot be president.
Well, they did n not only that, they are great presidents that Singapore had. Especailly President Ong, he fight hard but end up being the First President with State Assisted Furneral for his effort to be the president who dedicate himself for the people, by the people, our very own People's President.
In your case n theory, an insurance man cannot be president then may i ask, can the PAP who treats dedicated person to Singapore with great effort & impartiality in such manner be our leader, our government?
At this point of time, I m willing to take a risk and gamble on it as even our own government can nowhere be better than anyone. So I will give anyone one a chance to try, if they CMI then bye bye. If they are gd then thank god...
the problem is...the president's pay is so high....$4m. Whoever sits there will eventually be softened by the enormous benefits.
The president holding the key to the reserves.
He holds the right to question the accountability and transparency of the reserves.
Till today, no one have really audited the accounts and determine how much reserves do we have.
So, did the existing gentlemen perform his duty to earn his pay ?
Singapore do not need a face or a dummy to put for all ceremony.

Oh, long history, look uncle kosong, politics are dirty, it is a dirty game, if you are not dirty and cunning, dun join politics, join my pub as waiter, so much that I wanted to said PAP should treat pple nicer, but than, on understanding that politics which is invented by human, are dirty by nature, I hv to sometime respect PAP for their dirtyness. By the way, What is CMI?
