actually chee asked for it. He wanted to make a point by getting arrested for public speaking without a permit. Now that he's flouted the rule, he's seeking donations for his bail. That's poor planning, isn't it?
If he had really wanted to stage a public speech without permit, then at least get a hundred other people together and see what the govt can do about it. In short, chee asked for it.

Singapore claims to be a democracy. In reality, however, the ruling PAP maintains oppressive control over the city-state.
Its latest efforts to suppress political dissent include the impending imprisonment of Dr Chee Soon Juan. His crime? Speaking in public.
In Singapore, speaking in public requires a government permit. But the PAP government does not freely grant such permits to political opponents.
The prison term means Dr Chee cannot stand in this year’s parliamentary elections. The PAP presently controls 82 of Singapore’s 84 seats.
PAP also suppresses dissent by suing its opponents for libel. Where in other democracies politicians expect to be criticized, PAP politicians are thin-skinned.
For example, it is a libel to suggest nepotism is the reason why Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has his job – after his dad held it for 31 years.
Dynastic government? Kind of reminds you of Asia’s other political dynasty.
The Korean Kim legacy.
LKY already say before, even in his book, if the opposition needs to be crushed, it will be crushed.

Hsien Loong is like Mubarak's son Gamal. We should rise up against the PAP dictator like the Egyptians. The trouble wif us is tat we luv our money n property so much tat we r not willing to fight for our freedom. Look at the Egyptians, they kena tear gas, rubber bullet and bullets, still want to fight. We must protest like 1 million man march to Joo Chiat make Angel7030 pub our head quarters.
So afterward the police will mistaken Angel as our spokesperson n arrest her.

You "rise" up lor. I'm not sure if a whole lot of people will join u. I see more people queue for hello kitty than gather against political "oppression."

He dun even understand e word democracy.
He's humiliated at e polls... That's democracy tat majority did not vote for him.
The people that advocate democracy are usually the ones that do not even brace it

The trouble is Singapore follow the lousy British system. The party tat win the majority parliament seat get to set up government. Please lah, all the area demarcation is done by PAP, everything is favouring them.
We should follow the American system. Have Congress to represent parliament and separate vote to choose the government. The candidate for PM tat win get to choose his cabinet. Cabinet not from parliamentary rep but professional govt servants who r capable of running the country (wif lower salary).
Proportionate representation is good.

You think if CSJ come into power, he won’t take as much salary as the other ministers? CSJ will just say that since everyone is paid that much, he will be too.
Too high mah. Other countries including USA never draw so high.
Too high the motive for getting into politcs may be to earn money not for interests of Singaporean.
The motive will be wrong like pastor getting too much salary. Remember Ming Yi's pay also alot.
No offense to any religion.
Correct !
governorship = serving the interest of the citizen.
Not citizen serving the governor. Why is Singapore ministers so important tat they get paid CEO salary rates? Are they running a corporation bent on making profit and efficiency? No ! Their job is to serve the voters and help us to make better lifes. Not earn high scale salary. If the Ministers feel tat they r lowly paid, they r most welcomed to join the private service, we do not need money mongering people like tat. Singapore has enuf talent n citizen who r hungry to serve to replace these Super highly paid Ministers.
A Taiwan politician said.
没有一党独大的问题,人民最大。
PAP 也是如æ¤ï¼Œäººæ°‘选出æ¥çš„。
政府=人民公仆。
人民最大,人民和国家利益也最。
I find it alarming that some people seem to support or agree to the jailing of Dr Chee.
The topics here in this forum, and the ideological and philosophical spectrum of some people have confused me totally.
On one hand, they disapprove of ministers salary, housing prices, and wanted to have minimum wage rule. There are some who even seem to fall hook, line, and sinker, and swallow some cheap political propaganda and posturing from opposition regarding Thaipusam ruling recently, which in my mind is treacherous and is playing the racial card. Strangely some people seem to want to play that game enthusiastically and set themselves up as equality zealots.
Yet, on this issue, there is very little support for Dr Chee, or more to the point, against the nature of this action by the government.
In my mind, I disapprove and disagree with this action, because it is so heavy handed and neo-fascist to jail someone just because he is an opposition figure.
Is it necessary to silent him and jail him ?
This kind of action severely undermine the credibility and moral authority of the government.
I do not know why the Singapore government likes to shoot itself on the foot like this, and still use 1960s mentality.
It is regrettable.

tat's how we got things done back in the past.
I think e ppl inside here has forgotten how we came from.
No doubt, it's getting scary over the policies being implemented today.
