Dear Straits Times,
I refer to the 22 Oct 2010 Straits Times report of Singapore’s rise in the Global Pension Index 2010.
You forgot to mention that:
1. Singapore has been given the ‘C’ grade and that only two other
countries have obtained a worse grade. It would be good for
Singaporeans to know that a ‘C’ grade means that there are major risks
and shortcomings that should be addressed, failing which the efficacy
and long-term sustainability of our retirement provision becomes
questionable.
2. Singapore scored a dismal 43.7% in the most
important sub-index of ‘adequacy’ and that we are next to bottom in this
sub-index.
3. Singapore scored a dismal 0.2 for the
important indicator of ‘minimum retirement income as a percentage of
average income’ when all the other countries scored between 4.5 and 10.
4. Singapore scored a dismal 0.0 for the most important indicator of
‘net replacement rate’ when 8 out of the 14 countries scored at least
7.8 and another 4 countries scored at least 4.1

I read ST regularly for the good stuff.
The internet is for the bad stuff.
quite some time back, I attended a presentation from Singapore Press Holdings and the top management said the main local dailies face declining circulation and personally I don't read the ST, if a local daily circulation is declining, can it still be regarded as the main stream ? just wonder, actually, nowadays, I get news from the Internet more than from the newspapers, anyway it's a waste to read the local newspapers, because they are all junk to me, not much good quality content
if they continue their propaganda bullshit....who wanna buy papers from them? Those still subscribing to the papers belong to the baby boomers' generation, those who went through turbulent times in the 50s and 60s. When they finally retire or pass on, the younger generation will not take such bullshit. It can only only continue to decline.
I STOPPED BUYING STRAITS TIME WAY BACK ONLY IN 2002.ONLY BUY SATURDAYS JOB PAPERS BUT DIDNT GET ANY JOB ON ALL OF SATURDAYS PAPER IN MY LIFE,,,,NEWS DIDNT REALLY SEEM LIKE MUCH.
I DEMAND MORE BIKINI CLAD GALS IN STRAITS TIMES AS THATS THE ONLY BEST THING IN STRAITS TIMES.

I read recently in the ST, somebody wrote a piece in the forums stating he prefers reading the papers than news from the internet.
I read it and LOL.
Propaganda at its best.

Here it is.
The scary thing was - this was actually allowed to go on print.

We have an independent press.
All it takes are some ministers to keep denying that they can influence the local media.

This guy is seriously high on drugs. A very shallow article which claims :how internet cannot provide readers the review option. Well, we're not stupid either :)

That's why sometimes I enjoy reading ST.
So that I can LOL from time to time over the contents and propaganda.
“We want to make sure that the Press is, and is seen as, independent of the influence of Government.”
Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts
“It (Singapore press) should not join the political fray and become a political actor.”
K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law
“We’re aware people say we’re a government mouthpiece or that we are biased.”
Han Fook Kwang, Straits Time Chief Editor, acknowledging the existence of strong criticisms of Straits Times’ objectivity.
“Freedom of the press, freedom of the news media, must be subordinated to the overriding needs of singapore and to the primacy of purpose of an elected government.”
Lee Kuan Yew at the International Press Institute’s annual assembly in Helsinki in 1971.
Tony Tan is the SPH chairman....how to be independent of PAP? LOL......dun think we are bloody fools la.

Nah,they are all the same.Tony T,GOh Chok Ton,Mah BT,they all sucking the same cork of 1 person,LKY.
I only read the straits times when I want to check out any rigs or ships being going to be christened. Otherwise its just the front page when I drag it in from the front door in the morning.
As for me,i dont read the local newspaper anymore.I would read CNN news from the internet or Taiwan news from the TV,i dont interested in news that happen in dictatorial countries like Singapore n Mainland China.
I read ST cos my dad order.....and i like the sports pages. Other than that, it has little credibility.
not forgetting those regular opinion columns done by their spin doctors.
SPHee papers including Tday and whatever free papers are only good for a laugh and to use as shxt papers for pets to defecate on. I normally skim through headlines and yes, I would prefer lots of sexy, scantily clad girls on those papers, more pics and less words would be better.
They don't really have reporters that really reports, all of them come from ISDee, think they have a new bunch of jokers coming in as reporters, maybe to try to salvage their laughable reputation. Most of their news are from other news agency and the SPHee reporters would probbaly pee in their skirts or pants if they are ever sent to Iraq as war correspondents anyway. They can win all the print media awards all they want but it doesn't change the facts that SPHee is a scam.
The sad thing is that they are still people who believe in them.
