LHL - our dear Prime Minister - said recently that had he & his government know that Singaporeans were not ready for the challenges that exist today, they would have started preparing the nation 10 years ago. Hmmm, how should we take this comment?
I speak for myself only....
Firstly, for a multi-million dollar government Singapore has assembled, was he saying the g'ment didn't understand their people? Lame excuse... Secondly, 10 year's skills upgrading training does not solve the problem. If he really wanted to state the importance of training, what specific areas? Lame again.
But let's face it, FT is one important way to reinvent Singapore, we should embrace the challenge and not complaint.
LHL was really saying "I know it is getting difficult, but you either save yourself by improving or you will be wiped out!!"
Stop being complacent and start fighting people, it is time to learn the Spirit of our fore fathers!!
yeah.

Well, from the practical stand point, yes, we either wake-up or whine & whine.

We whine and whine.
Then after elections, obediently pay and pay.
And then we whine some more.

He loves you too much to allow you to feel some pain and dilemma for the greater good of your own future.
Would you not have bear with the pain to allow your precious child to undergo a painful surgery for the greater good of his own future?

So you are saying it was a wake up call? Agreed. I have been advocating fellow Singaporeans to buckle up all these while - read my other topic "If you leave Singapore, where would you go?"
The impression I gather at that topic is that most of the people who contribute to that forum tend to like whinning and complaint a lot about FT's. Where the real path to salvation is self-reliance and unending self-improvement.
On the other hand, for LHL to come out talking now about realizing Singaporeans' ill-preparedness 10 years late is kinda disappointing. If he was sincere about it, then the government is not worth the money we pay for.
Think Singapore was caught in the middle of a global competition, and though we were not ready for FT's we needed to go along with the "reinventing Singapore" policy, and we are patching up the holes as we go along. But this is just my view... Not easy for our leaders, and let's see how they do it without hurting the real natives too much.
For the first comment... it sounds to me like saying i should prepare 10 days ago since the exam paper is so difficult... this is for example...Actually i mean how will you prepare ppl ten years ago if you can know that the ppl cannot handle challenges ten years later? The world is ever-changing and to make such comment is naive... In the end, it just sounds like crying over spilled milk...
I'm more concerned about our PM's view on being an effective leader.
'In South-east Asia, Suharto was an effective leader. He did many good things for Indonesia and fostered stability and growth not just for Indonesia but also for the whole region, and Singapore was a beneficiary of that.'

Not to worry, Suharto is not as effective as our PM, Suharto tooks illegal high income to be an effective leader, our PM takes legal high income and therefore he is more effective and smarter than Suharto. You can bring a leader down if what he is doing is legal.
LHL's comments about Suharto's leadership and how Singapore has benefitted are just political talks people....don't take it seriously.
Some Suharto's "Guru's" and trusted people are still trying to tap the nation's wealth for personal gains, "keeping up the tradition" you know...
Btw, how are Singaporeans dealing with FT these days, do we owe it up and deal with it head on? Our way of "keeping up the tradition" is probably - whine, complaint, hope for government to do something, feel happy for a small gesture (that looks like solving the problem but not really), feel indifferent, then happy again....
WAKE UP!!!
We are an aging country where the ever shrinking younger generation is feeling too comfortable and contented.
Sometimes I'm just fed up with the Progress of Singapore. Do we need to accelerate that fast?
WHAT DOES LEE HSIEN LOONG KNOW??hes position of prime minister is elbowed by his dad n given to him.he never worked for his position in the first place....so what is this dude talkin bout upgrading and stuff????he knows nuts to me and he doesnt earn his respect from anyone.

LOL!!!Ya,i have also read the news.LHL said that his "idol" was Suharto,i mean what, the leader who watch his countrymen kill other races of fellow countrymen (Chinese who lived in Indonesia) n do nothing about it?...
Ok guys,i dont want to say this....But actually,my "idol" is Adolf Hitler n Joseph Stalin,i admire Hitler for wiping out Jews although they are also German in Nationality, and Stalin for killing thousands or even millions of his own countrymen n women just to keep in power.
Now,do i win LHL n get a cookie?
suspects lhl might be from IMH...he just didnt renew his membership.

Handsome? cbl.
it's ironical that suharto discriminated against the chinese by restricting them from the public sector and yet the biggest chinese businesses today were set up during his era. 10 in 10 times i travel round indonesia, I will see local indon workers at the shop front and the chinese sitting at his little desk behind counting the money.
The indonesian economy is dictated by the chinese.
To be precise, Indonesia chinese, you should know suharto grandma is a chinese, and she it the one who took care of him since young.
sure or not lol. He's javanese la and he wasnt brought up by his grandma.
