"demand for open political combat may eventually open the door to race-based politics"
Do you agreed with this statement? What's your take on this statement?
The Govt did a great job in the last 40 yrs building nation to establish identity as - Singaporean.
Than recently with his remarks.... He back track the national Pledge only as "an aspiration". and govt further weaken Singaporean identity by adopting liberal immigration policies that diminished social cohersion.........now he is concern with RACE base politics?
Maybe he should review the cause and effect of his govt policies before pointing finger at younger generation?
As with all immigration nations, there is always an inheritant risk of being pull in different direction....... that is why political frame work and constitution to safe guard the process to ensure no Single interest group should dominate the entire country that include pap.
So who is safe guarding Singapore Citizen from Pap for the last 40 yrs who amended the constituion to suit their needs?
gerrymander
Terry Jones had his freedom of speech and expression.
But the damage has already been done, and discord sown.
the point isn't about doing the right thing or adopt the right policies....even Pap screw up. We will know the political frame work is working if there is mechanism for the people to self correct itself and renew the balance of power that is why you see changes happen.
So in Singapore if you depend on single party to renew itself than you forever rely on a single interest group...... you lack the political frame work to rise your concern....
so now they decided to pay themselve million and reduce housing supplies, and over crowded singapore.....loss millions in public funds.
There is no frame work?
I believe he is playing on people's fears for his or his party's own agenda.
looks like the govt is using the media to kick start the theme of this yr election....reminding singaporean not to touch sensitive issue.....but hey wait a minute did anybody said using the "R" word.....
We live in South East Asia.
The people have a gentle demeanour, but underneath that gentleness is suppressed rage.
There is a word for it, amok. <Caution Extremely Disturbing>
If more and more foreigners come in at too fast a speed, race based politics might eventually become a problem, IMO.
But its not really about race, its about where you come from... Singapore Chinese vs PRCs... Singapore Indians vs Indians from India... the differences in tastes, preferences, culture and behaviour....
My observation is that our govt will use what ever method, mean or strategy to up play Singaporeans weak points.
In the past, where seizeable population was uneducated and gullible - this plan work fine.

EXACTLY,
On one hand, they telling us not to rock-the-boat, else race politic results.
On the other hand, they are rocking-the-boat like hell by bringing all sort of aliens and exacerbating the potentiality of race politic.
Yeah our liberal immigration policies certainly will open up to degree of foreign interest..............but its still not evident that opened politics does not lead to Race politics?
S'pore got identity meh ???
S'pore never kana major crisis yet plus PAP super tight control ..................
racism is still thriving.............it's something so natural, it's impossible to deny..............

It is also not evident that opened politics will not lead to Race politics.
The issue is to try or not. To take the risk or not.
Maybe it won't, maybe it will.
We won't know till we try it out.
Simple example: To name a primary school.
1. Munshi Abdullah Primary School
2. Rumba Nandri Primary School
3. Mei Hua Primary School
By democratic means ( i.e. most votes) which name will be selected?
If it goes on, one day the parang will come out.
