SDP calling netizens: Help us win Bukit Panjang
We wrote in yesterday's column how the PAP is nervous about the Singapore Democrats campaigning in Bukit Panjang and getting the Straits Times to run a two-page advertisement for its MP, Dr Teo Ho Pin.
How else can one conclude wihen the ST writers not so subtly rammed home the point that Dr Teo is good and invincible, and the SDP is bad and cannot win? The quote at the end of the piece says it all: "Dr Teo is already so popular in Bukit Panjang. Now that everyone is so happy with the upgrading works and new sports complex, he might even do better in the next elections."
But while the media heap praise upon Dr Teo, they black out news about the SDP. Examples: The Straits Times refused to report on our fight for the residents and stallholders over the closure of the Fajar wet market.
We had signed the petition put up stallholders, met Dr Teo during his meet-the-people sesion, and written to Sheng Siong and the HDB over the issue. But none of this was reported by the Straits Times.
The media also made sure nothing was reported about our Alternative Economic Programme. They avoided attending our public forum during which we discussed specific proposals about Singapore's economic direction.
The Straits Times even went to the extent of refusing to publish our replies to letters written by PAP supporters attacking SDP in the Forum page.
Not only are our views censored by the media, the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts withheld our permit to publish our newspaper, The New Democrat. As a result Bukit Panjang voters couldn't read our news. Communication with the voters was made impossible.
PAP has SPH, SDP has netizens
While Dr Teo has the backing of his party that controls the media and the electoral process, the Singapore Democrats enjoy no such advantage.
But we have something that the PAP doesn't. We have you, the netizens of Singapore. While it is impossible for us to get our views through the traditional media, we have the new media.
We ask you, our friends and supporters in cyberspace, to help us get our message across. We need your help to overcome the PAP's media blockade. You can help us in a few ways:
One, email this piece to your friends by clicking on the button at the top right corner of this page. If each of you can email this appeal to your friends and contacts, we will have spread our message exponentially.
Two, share this article with your Facebook friends and also invite them to join our Facebook.
Three. we also need to reach those who do not frequent the Internet. For this we need to print and distribute flyers. This takes money. We need you to donate to the campaign so that we can step up our communication effort with the residents at Bukit Panjang.
We cannot wait until the elections to start distributing these flyers and conducting campaign activities. By then, it'll be too little, too late.
Don't let the PAP and the Straits Times continue to win elections by controlling the media. We need netizens like you to do your part. If you do your part, we will be able to give the PAP a run for its money.
So please donate. Donate now and donate generously. Every bit counts. Click here.
Finally, we need more than just funds. We need campaign workers who will help us carry out our election work, both online and on the ground. We started our work a long time ago. We are intensifying it now and we need your help. Apart from contributing financially to the cause, please also volunteer your services. Email us at[email protected].
This election is crucial in many ways.
The issues are pressing as they are worrying: The deliberate flooding of Singapore with foreigners, the escalating cost of living, the unaffordable price of HDB flats, stc.
We need your support to stop the PAP from continuing these policies that are dragging us over the cliff. We cannot do this alone. We need your support.
Help us win Bukit Panjang.

CSJ can kiss my ass for destroying the opposition movement

I think only way for opposition to win is to wait for PAP to make a big big mistake until it loses alot of support. That time opposition can win alot of seats in parliament maybe overthrow PAP.
Freak election results?wait PAP call in army to suppress.
I think all political parties make big mistake sooner or later.
Or PAP split into 2 parties.
Help you to win BP?
Sorry...I not living in BP...how to help?
You should ask residents living in BP to help you.
If BP residents dont trust you, you also lan lan will lose.
So, no point asking pple around spore to help you.

PAP split before already, can they afford to split somemore?
If the election changed, I mean all pple vote regardless of where you live: PAP vs OPP....that will be different story.
Maybe have to wait for the old Lee to die 1st than opposition got chance to win..
Don't vote for the rebel parties, you will risk your future when they are not capable.

Maybe in the future u need to vote for opposition.
There's no gurantee PAP will always be a good party or govern countries without big mistakes.
Look at Japan ruling party for 50 years then overthrown.
Actually, if SDP wins BP, I think it reflects not how much people like SDP but rather how less popular the incumbent party has become.
Past few years of mega boo boos have really been an eye opener for previously pro incumbent supporters.
Dr. Teo Ho Pin did a lot for the constituency, and frankly speaking, he is probably one of the low profile MP... but with high visibility around the estate.
Always see him mingling with the older residents... and signing up Taichi and Qigong classes to get into contact with residents every week... and joining residents in monthly brisk walking activities. He is also always seen at the Bangkit Market..... so aunties and uncles also know him.
The only tough part with this elections in Bukit Panjang this time round is that 20% of the people in his constituency would be the younger generation, who will be voting for the first time.
And many of the younger generation are actually struggling right now... cant get into uni places... cant get a job.... and they may actually influence their parents to vote for the opposition....
As for the promises he made in 2006.. the only thing he did not achieve was that he promised a sports complex that comes with a swimming pool..... at Petir Road... which was then shelved to become an open concrete sports corner. In 2008, works started at Bukit Panjang Park where a new sports complex will be built, but without a swimming pool. So far, the sports complex is still in construction... 2 tennis courts... with no swimming pool that was promised.
I live in Bukit Panjang. Frankly speaking, I like Teo Ho Pin but i dun like the party he is in! How!!! SO HARD TO VOTE!!!

Agree! I do hope other political parties can come in and let Bukit Panjang residents choose... So far what we get is PAP or SDP or spoil the vote.

Not really. 70 per cent is too excessive.

Maybe got the fear of votes being tracked.

You meant elections? or your own poll?
Anyway, I believe there are a lot of people out there who are neutral.... though they voted PAP in the last elections... so they can shift away anytime....
4 types of voters
1. PAP supporters
2. Anti-PAP supporters
3. Neutral
4. Scared to get tracked down Kiasi residents....

USA also same
1) Republican
2)democrats
3) swing votes/voters
My frenz persuaded his uncle to vote for obama,he said I am sticking with republican no democrats.
So he go persaude those who havent make up their mind.
Those very firm supporters cant change much. I am surprised singapore got swing votes?
Taiwan
1)Pan green
2) pan blue
3)central voters/swing votes
Ahbian corruption his party still gt 41 percent in 2008 presidential election by another candidates nt ah bian.
So 2008,pan green lost support of the swing votes and thus lost.resident Ma gt the swing votes.
2004, it's believed that the 2 bullets sway the swing votes out of sympathy so Ahbian narrowly elected with a narrow margin. 319 shooting.
One point to note: a lot of people are still voting based on bread and butter issues - housing, jobs and salary, retirement issues, education, cost of living etc.
All these YOG, F1 mega events do little to benefit the common folks.
So you won't see the ah ma, ah pek voting incumbent because they enjoyed the "YOG" or "F1"

CSJ vs PAP for bukit panjang? That's like between a rock and a very hard place. I rather vote the ruling party than that clown.

This election have a lot....
20s - cant get into uni / cant get a job
30s - cant get a HDB flat / HDB too expensive / cant get the 5Cs
40s - lost job.... cant find a job
50s - the luckier ones... probably half already lost earlier... now with a job.... some escaped unhurt
60s and above - SAFE. PAP is VERY GOOD. Everytime GST credits.. we get the most... cos we are elderly! Those who are too sick and down with too many medical bills cant walk to the polling stations... so never vote.
