Why the big hoo-ha about Jet Li?
Machiam like treating what he said or do like the Gospel

just another side of the story about immigrants in Singapore, for those who don't read newspaper, or choose only what they want to read. Jet Li is just somebody most people know.
may be some find it quite difficult to swallow that there are good reasons why people are coming here. it also prove that to some singapore is bad news, to others it is Gospel.
Originally posted by sgdiehard:It was reported in Lianhe Zhaobao today, when Jet Li was asked about his choice to become Singaporean, he said this "I have lived in the US for many years, China for many years, I wanted a place where I can let my two daughters receive education in both english and chinese, a place where I can go out working without worry about their safety, 找找去,I found Singapore."
I believe the same thought went through the minds of many chinese, from PRC, Taiwan, HK and the asean countries, who chose to settle in Singapore.
I believe the immigrants from the tamil speaking part of india also find singapore a more familiar place to settle in. The hindi speaking ones would want to settle in america, the singh want to settle in canada,....
Finding a place to settle, to bring up families take more than just a high salary. May be that is why many singaporean who are overseas have not given up their singaporean citizenship. Things could be very different when its time to raise children.
of course, when their children grown up, they will learn to kpkb like singaporean, and then think of migrating.
what is there to kpkb for the very wealthy?

There are good and bad.
But if got money, many of the bads can be negated. That's the diff.

what is good to some is bad for others, how much money you need to negate what is bad for you, and what choice is available. There are a lot of diff. Not all rich are happy, not all poor are sad.

Well, being able to buy what you want/need is good for all. Being able to get the best medical care for you and love ones is good for all.
Or you can show me example of "What is good for some is bad to other", because I don't see this statement happening much at all.

That's a common line to trick the common poor man to be happy
Be happy

never heard of the saying "somebody's meat is another's poison"?
may be to you money is everything, to me I pay a price for the money I make. If I have to sacrifice my time for my family or if I work so hard and spoil my health for a few dollars more, then that few dollars is bad for me. to you every cent is good.
What is the best health care? I am young and healthy, if i take as much health supplement as some old folks, that is bad for me.
What do you need in life? how much money you need to live a comfortable life. bear in mind, in singapore, like everywhere else, there is big income gap, but that doesn't mean the poor are not happy or the rich are always happy.

Are the common poor folk all conned into happiness?
The angmoh says "positive thinking is a secret to happiness". the chinese says "知足长."
Worrying, complaining will not bring you happiness, and definitely won't give you one extra cent.
Be happy

Hehe
The distinction comes when you see your peers being able to afford the best for their family but you can't and have to persuade your family that positive thinking is the secret to happiness.
It comes when you see your peers being self-sufficient to retire by 35~40 and spend lots of time with their family while the common man still need to slog till 67 retirement age to get some CPF out to spend
Worry? You better worry when any illness strikes your family members (touch wood, I hope it will never happen to any of us) and your cash isn't enough to feed the mounting medical bills.
Oh ya, persuade them that 知足长, their life on Earth is long enough.

chances there are more bads than goods in SG.....and the goods are insignificant to the basic needs to live. But the Bads in SG play major parts in our lives.....
Also to Add.....even if I acknowledged there are 5 million citizens in SG....what percentage of the citizens has the financial asset of Jet Li.......problem in SG media is that they glorified those wealthy folks to migrate here....it only solidified that our govt only served the Rich and the Wealthy.

haha ,
why are you comparing yourself with your peers, or anybody. 比上ä¸足,比下有余,人比人,气æ»äººã€‚you just can't just provide your family with words of wisdom from the wise man, you must show them you are wise man too .
You need to plan for retirement, realistic planning. If all you have for retirement is your CPF, then the government is right that you should not take all at 55, and leave nothing when you are 65, who would look after you if you survive at 75, especially when you don't have children to depend on ?
who actually retire at 35 - 40? if they can make that much money within such a short time, would they give up and retire? money no enough.
I don't wait till sickness strikes to worry about mounting medical bills. I have enough insurance coverage for me and family, for hospitalization and critical illness. I say the same for most peers working. Not so sure about old folks, especially those with no children, that is probably a major medical issue in singapore society.
worry will only weaken you, it will not increase your time on earth by 1 min! so why worry, be happy.
By the way, spend time with your children even before you retire. your children deserve parental care when they are born. don't give them money and maid while you are out accumulating your wealth for retirement.

rich people can go anywhere, why come to singapore? quoting Jet Li is just to show why some choose singapore. Children education and safety! Not all immigrants come here with that kind of money, but many for the same reason.

You don't need to compare with your peers. Your family will. Like you said, things could be very different when its time to raise children. If you are still working, do you think your child will be spending more waking hours with you to get influenced by your positive thinking as compared to being in the education system where comparison with peers is rife?
Who talked about retiring at 35~40? I'm talking about being self-sufficient to retire by then, but doesn't necessary mean you need to retire. At 27 yrs old, I'm already self-sufficient; there's no need to work hard anymore if it's just myself. I continue to work so that I will have the cash to support a family in addition to my gf's and my parents in the future, that's all. If it's just by myself, I can almost retire already. Work for the sake of fun, for the sake of spending time, but not for the sake of $ at all. That's what I mean.
Like what WB says, he tap dance to work everyday. I can say that for myself too
And....
if they can make that much money within such a short time, would they give up and retire?
Well, aren't you the one who said:

Btw, who said you need to work so much harder for a few dollars (or rather, a few thousands) more such that you have no time for your family? Your brain power is excellent and priceless, trust me. This is seriously a compliment

Me and my wife know we need to avoid senseless comparison, and be vigilant against gossip. I depend on my wife and my parents, who help look after my children, to impart this value to my children, when I do not have time to influence them. One important lesson I learned is never react to any comparison. We save a lot by not following trends. In the end, I mix around with people who share my values.
blessed are your family and parents for you take the responsibility to support them.
blessed are you who know what is enough.
blessed is our conversation for PAP, LKY or the singapore government is not part of it.
