i sometime wonder if it is truly worth it for foreigners to come to work in SG....due to the high cost of living.
Rental for a room rate - $500 - $700 a month in a HDB room which does not allow cooking including food that probably take 1/3 out of salary.
If they come from PRC maybe their salary is reduce to remain competitive.
So the motives behind these people to take up jobs here are either for the passport so that they can move on to other place. Or CPF monies to withdraw at the later period.
Maybe a uni degree is not worth much in Singapore.

Depends on how well you make use of it.
Get degree but don't make use of degree = make degree useless
depends, some really get degrees, some get those shortsighted or longsighted degrees and some just wonder about the angles degree and also temperature degree. Actually in term of spectacles is concern, most Singaporeans hold high degrees, and that is why i invested in lasik company.

It was reported in Lianhe Zhaobao today, when Jet Li was asked about his choice to become Singaporean, he said this "I have lived in the US for many years, China for many years, I wanted a place where I can let my two daughters receive education in both english and chinese, a place where I can go out working without worry about their safety, 找找去,I found Singapore."
I believe the same thought went through the minds of many chinese, from PRC, Taiwan, HK and the asean countries, who chose to settle in Singapore.
I believe the immigrants from the tamil speaking part of india also find singapore a more familiar place to settle in. The hindi speaking ones would want to settle in america, the singh want to settle in canada,....
Finding a place to settle, to bring up families take more than just a high salary. May be that is why many singaporean who are overseas have not given up their singaporean citizenship. Things could be very different when its time to raise children.
of course, when their children grown up, they will learn to kpkb like singaporean, and then think of migrating.
Jet Lee children no need to worry about money liao lar. if they dun want to work also can.
u have to be at the right time, place, people, and a horde of other "harmonious" factors to be luckily chanced on the best job...thats why the 80/20 rule....
besides supply and demand...of course its more competitive to get the desired job on a small island....
luck does play a part in job finding....u have it all...but its just not yours...
this also applies to businesses....how many people lament that they have all the ingredients right,...but why do they business still fail? its people that make business people...tastes and preferences change...
stay abreast on skills..and continue to explore....network...move than to stand still....
most, for all u know, are ruthless to get where they are today ...so when they are at the very top, they tell u to be kind to people below u...

aiya, jet li's children don't have to work even if they are in US, OZ or Canada, but staying in Singapore is not their choice. When do you wish your parents had brought you up?

Spore is still too resticted in many ways compared to US or Canada. Furthermore, the education system in this country taught students to do rote memory which resulted in people being less creative.
what the business school will never teach u books....
TO BE RUTHLESS....
they simply can't teach that in school....
they taught us a module on ethical business management, things like corporate ethics, business ethics, moral philisophy etc etc,..but there is no examination for all these, so as a student, we dun bother so much.

At the end of the day it is how much you understand the country you are migrating to.....and not the superficial things you see....
Most foreigners particularly from Asia have wrong impression of how the US society works....impart is because Asian depend too much on their Govt. For example in the US it is not the system that take care of Children it is the Parents that bring up the children.
in US school system....
There are parent teacher association meetings, After school game activities. Its almost a full time job to be part of School activities for parents. There are awards from Teacher to students that parents need to attend the level of confident and recognition given to child development.....Etc....No kidding.
Unlike in Singapore, we expect the school system and society to takecare of child developmentwe send the kids to school and pick them up after school. Any events just throw money to school. At home there are maids. Tuition centers available just pay.
Originally posted by Rooney9:Jet Lee children no need to worry about money liao lar. if they dun want to work also can.
Its a mentality issued. Jet Li probably just spend monies on Nanny and Maids.
I swear that the other day I saw in a job classified Advertisment looking for HOME Governor to take care of home and kids.........
the requirement needs to have a degree...detail in planning....and required to submit a resume....not sure when did Singapore evolved to this level of family social structure.

you are absolutely right, many people see only the superficial things they see in the US, and compare the worse you get in Singapore. This remark is interesting "Its almost a full time job to be part of School activities for parents". I guess the situation is very different in that most singaporean parents are so full time in their job, there is little time for their children's family activities, where got time to for school activities.
Unless you bring up your children in the US, you will only know about the system from hear say. What really matters is your action, where do you bring up your children? Jet Li LIVED in the US for many years, he speaks american, he was not confined to china town anywhere, and in the end, he chose Singapore. His action speaks louder than many words.
again, you are absolutely right about the education system in Singapore, the young people are the products moulded more by the school system and society, with little trace of their family and culture. Every damn thing not happy also complain about the system, the government, the society......

I don't know Jet Li, not even his fan, especially when he went to hollywood. How well you know Jet Li to make such remark on how he runs his family? Looking from outside, his family is normal, with wife and children. Will he be another Tiger Woods we don't know. He is rich, and rich and normal family can have nanny and maids, there is nothing wrong with that.
from the advertisement it appears that singaporeans really want what the rich brits used to have, a butler or chamberlaine, you call that evolution?

Jet Li doesn't speak american lar.... even Sg's local bengs also speak better english.
He not confined anywhere and in the end chose Singapore?.... because he wants his children to learn English and Chinese and be versatile.... he also wants the place to be safe.... after they receive the education liao what happens? Stay in Singapore or leave? You draw your own conclusion ba.
His action speaks louder than many words? .... but if you don't read the words how much action you also won't get the point.

You sure Jet Li doesn' t speak american? may be you think you don't need to speak american to live in america. Singaporean, including local ah beng speak singlish, not english. Who speak english these days?
so you think they will leave singapore after their children education? isn't it the same like many local born singaporean who have left singapore after they complete their education, I have better faith in jet li's children that they don't go to the net and complain and complain, like some singaporean. I hope Jet Li's family education to their children is better than many people here. I can be wrong, but I wont' want to pass the judgement too soon.
Reading words won't give you the experience in life.
Reading words won't build any personal relationship with anybody,
Reading words won't bring you to any greener pastures.
Reading words can only give you a dream.
Can't achieve your dream then write more words,...show frustration, bitching, moaning...what is the point?

Answer : Americans, Singaporeans and the Ah bengs ... Only difference is that Americans and Singaporeans have their own slang the Americans in general have better grammer and the Bengs the least.

Answer : Reading words can help you attain a better education that might allow you to migrate to a country with greener pastures, allow you to achieve a dream to have more $, more freedom and with that $ give you the experience of a lifetime and retire earlier to spend more time with personal relationships.
2) Can't achieve your dream then write more words
Answer : Nono, read the words not write.... with reading/listening you learn.... write only after you've learned. How it can help you achieve a dream refer to point 1.

ultimately, only the rich gets to choose which countries they prefer to live. Those not so rich or are struggling to make ends meet, might want to plan out their retirement in singapore or worse, work forever until u die
